Undergraduate (UG) civil engineering students should graduate from university with knowledge that links their computational competence in structural engineering and mechanics to construction technology principles, processes and practice. However, there appears to be a paucity of evidence to suggest that UG civil engineering students receive sufficient instruction in construction technology throughout their degree studies. This paper presents evidence from a study employing the weekly New Civil Engineer (NCE) publication as a vehicle for introducing construction technology to first year students. The results reveal that students found this publication interesting and inspirational. Whilst this innovative approach to teaching construction technology would be best 'blended' throughout the UG course, its introduction, application and success arguably requires a multidisciplinary and carefully 'engineered' approach. Given the diversity of academic staff, individual motivation and the professional demands of a contemporary mass higher education system, the prospective benefits from 'blended' learning in UG construction technology studies will in all probability remain unfulfilled.

“…There is a general acceptance of these systems for their benefits, providing students an opportunity to practice solving as many problems with: 1) immediate solutions, 2) hints to answers if necessary, and 3) an easy assessment for faculty among many others. However there may be a long term effect that we are already observing [13] with a heavier reliance on computer technologies: a demise of technical communication abilities. We are not suggesting that online homework systems never be used; we are simply suggesting that one consider the skills that may be lost when there is no interaction or personal assessment of student's skills.…”

Julian received his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech in Engineering Mechanics in 2007. He spent a semester teaching at community college in the area and then spent two years at University of Massachusetts continuing his research in finite element modeling and biomechanics and continuing to teach. In 2010, he began his current tenure track position at the University of Southern Indiana. Dr. Thomas McDonald, University of Southern IndianaTom McDonald is an Associate Professor in the Engineering Department at the University of Southern Indiana. Prior to joining USI he taught for six years in the School of Technology at Eastern Illinois University. He earned his BSIE and MSIE degrees in Industrial Engineering from Clemson University and his PhD in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech. His research and teaching interests primarily include lean manufacturing, discrete event simulation and modeling, and engineering economy. AbstractOnline homework systems have been used in math, engineering and other sciences for several years to distribute, collect and assess homework problems. As these systems have grown publishers have added beneficial features such as hints, based on student input and the ability to assess electronically drawn diagrams. Many studies have shown that there is no significant difference between different modes of homework delivery (handwritten, online or a hybrid of the two) and the success of a student within the class. However, missing from online homework systems is the assessment a student's ability to present a clear and logical solution: technical communication.The objective of this study is to assess the relationship between student's ability to present a clear and organized solution and their ability to correctly solve a problem. A 4 section rubric is used to score homework and exam problems over 3 semesters of mechanics classes (Statics and Dynamics). Included in the rubric are scores associated with solving the problem: the Solution score, and a Presentation score evaluating the organization of the solution.Analysis of these data (over 1,000 samples), indicate a significant positive relationship between the Presentation score and the Solution score. With such a strong correlation between a students' ability to present a logical problem solving process and their ability to formulate & solve engineering problems, should we not consider teaching students how to effectively present their work?

Resumen de la tesisEl empleo de los interfaces naturales o basados en bocetos no se ha extendido aún debido a los problemas que presentan en la actualidad, tales como el de la robustez, repetibilidad o fiabilidad, los cuales no están garantizados en este tipo de interfaces de usuario. Los reconocedores actuales que se pueden utilizar en línea sobre aplicaciones interactivas tampoco ofrecen soluciones idóneas. Estos suelen ser poco flexibles y su porcentaje de acierto en la clasificación decrece según aumenta el número de gestos o símbolos que admite el sistema. Este tipo de interfaces es muy conveniente, ya que permitirían soportar las fases iniciales del diseño (diseño conceptual) que actualmente se trabajan únicamente con lápiz y papel, debido fundamentalmente a que la funcionalidad que ofrece lo que existe hoy en día no supera en nada a dichas herramientas tradicionales, todo lo contrario. La idea pues, es la creación de un interfaz que permita los bocetos paramétricos por ordenador y su posterior reutilización en aplicaciones CAD para la creación de geometría, que es la motivación principal de esta tesis.En la presente tesis se ha diseñado un paradigma de reconocimiento de bocetos fiable y robusto que puede dar soporte al usuario en las primeras etapas del diseño conceptual, y en último término se ha desarrollado un interfaz caligráfico natural (que permite la generación espontánea de ideas en papel), adaptativo (que permite al usuario definir geometría imprecisa e incompleta) y transparente (que el usuario puede dibujar una línea a trazos o un rayado de un área sin anunciar dicha intención a la aplicación por medio de algún menú).Para la implementación del interfaz diseñado se ha recurrido a una plataforma multiagente, pues se ha comprobado que los sistemas basados en agentes son válidos para aquellas aplicaciones...
