Graphene: Safe or Toxic? The Two Faces of the Medal

Abstract: Graphene is considered the future revolutionary material. For its development, it is of fundamental importance to evaluate the safety profile and the impact on health. Graphene is part of a bigger family which has been identified as the graphene family nanomaterials (GFNs). Clarifying the existence of multiple graphene forms allows better understanding the differences between the components and eventually correlating their biological effects to the physicochemical characteristics of each structure. Some in vit… Show more

“…Nevertheless, the use of water as a liquid medium in UILPE of graphite opens perspectives to green chemistry and to the development of graphene-based biocompatible materials. [193,194] Remarkably, the low performance of water in UILPE can be overcome by using DSAs molecules to help the exfoliated graphene sheets to remain dispersed and prevent their aggregation. [195][196][197][198][199][200][201][202][203] …”

“…These abnormalities of the tissue ultra-architecture indicate pathological effects of pG on the structure of lipid membranes, confirming that lipid membranes may be a significant platform for hydrophobic graphene localization. 36 It ought to be emphasized that, in the present study, pG was given at the beginning of embryogenesis, when the brain and blood-brain barrier were not developed. pG was probably circulated within the organism by different routes and was present in the brain before blood-brain barrier development, which begins at about day 10 of embryogenesis.…”
