Graphene Oxide Nanosheet Wrapped White-Emissive Conjugated Polymer Nanoparticles

Abstract: We have demonstrated the preparation of white-emissive conjugated polymer nanoparticles wrapped with graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets. Highly stable, GO-wrapped, poly(9,9-di-n-octylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl) nanoparticles (GO-PFO NPs) with diameters in the range 30-150 nm were successfully obtained by utilizing the GO nanosheets as an interface stabilizer in an emulsification process. The synthesized GO-PFO NPs exhibited unique white-emitting photoluminescence with a characteristic green-emissive broad band above 500 n… Show more

“…While the green band was suggested to be a result of the presence of a GO nanosheet shell surrounding the PFO NPs, PL decay analysis (Fig. (b)) showed that the PFO NPs wrapped in GO have a longer luminescence lifetime in comparison to the neat PFO NPs . Similar observations were made for the EL of such hybrid structures.…”

“…However, now they are always spotted in close contact with wrinkled sheets of GO, indicating the creation of intimate interface interactions and thus the formation of true P3HT NPs –GO nanohybrids. While Figure c eventually may suggest a wrapping of the P3HT NPs by GO sheets as observed in studies on poly(9,9‐di‐ n ‐octylfluorenyl‐2,7‐diyl) nanoparticles using small GO sheets, AFM studies rather suggest a deposition of the forming P3HT NPs onto the micrometer sized GO sheets, whose original size should not be affected by the employed reprecipitation process. This may even lead to the creation of larger agglomerates of P3HT NPs on the GO sheets as shown in Figure d.…”

“…One specific example was in the work done by Zhao’s group 50 , who fabricated graphene wrapped mesoporous Silica nanoparticles with the total radius around ~50 nm which is very similar to our model. Besides the electrostatic self-assembly, graphene wrapped dielectric particles can be fabricated in an emulsification process 51 as well. Though experimental deviation from an idealized spherical graphene coating, as well as surface roughness, can’t be avoided, the above experimental evidences underscore the relevance of the geometry beyond a theoretical perspective.…”
