BACKGROUND In this study, a novel magnetic material was applied as an adsorbent for simultaneous removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The adsorbent was synthesized using functionalized MnFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles grafted to lamellar graphene oxide surface (MnFe2O4@SiO2‐NH2@GO) and characterized using X‐ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and magnetic measurements. RESULTS The adsorbent exhibited superior adsorption properties for Pb(II) and Cd(II). The maximum uptake capacity of Pb(II) and Cd(II) reached 42.48 and 18.28 mg g−1 within 30 min at 25 °C, respectively. The data for adsorption fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo‐second‐order kinetic models, which indicated that the adsorption was via monolayer chemisorption on homogeneous sites. The calculation of thermodynamic parameters revealed spontaneous and endothermic adsorption processes accompanied by randomness increase. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis indicated that the coordination between nitrogen atoms of amino groups and the two types of heavy metal ions was a possible adsorption mechanism. CONCLUSIONS MnFe2O4@SiO2‐NH2@GO possesses the properties of high adsorption efficiency, fast separation, high stability and easy regeneration for adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions. Thus, the as‐prepared adsorbent is considered as a promising material for the removal of heavy metal ions and this research could offer a new means for water cleanup. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry

Background: Lead is among the most lethal heavy metals, displaying toxicity towards humans, animals and plants. Removal of lead ions from wastewater prior to its disposal is very important. Consequently, the development of adsorbents which can effectively remove Pb(II) from water is a subject of growing research interest.Results: Polyethyleneimine-coated magnetic nanoparticles functionalized with various compounds, namely salicylaldehyde, carbon disulfide and o-vanillin, were synthesized and employed in the removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. These compounds act as chelating agents which bind to toxic metal ions to form complex structures which are easily removed from the solutions. A very effective uptake of Pb(II) (98.1% of 25 mg L −1 Pb(II)) was achieved with an adsorbent dose of 10 mg, a contact time of 60 min and at a pH of 6.5. Equilibrium data for isothermal, kinetic and thermodynamic studies indicate that the process of adsorption fitted well with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. The kinetics of adsorption proceeded through a pseudo-second-order rate while the thermodynamic parameters indicated that the process was spontaneous and endothermic.Conclusion: Functionalization of iron oxide nanoparticles was confirmed by various techniques. Adsorption factors were optimized in order to achieve maximum removal of Pb(II). The modified magnetic materials are highly effective active sorbent materials. The hydroxyl, thiol and thiocarbamate groups have a synergistic effect on Pb 2+ removal through electrostatic interactions and chelation. Adsorption studies demonstrate that a high adsorption capacity (92%) was achieved within 10 min at 25 °C using the adsorbent MNP@PEI-CS 2 . The nanoadsorbents can be reused without affecting their removal capacity.

The bioactive compounds like rutin, naringin, and gallic acid have been separated from lemon peel by graphene oxide (GO). The different influences such as pH values and separation conditions were investigated. Moreover, the samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, UV‐Vis spectroscopy, and high‐performance liquid chromatography. The findings of high‐performance liquid chromatography revealed that the adsorbed proportion of rutin by GO was more than naringin and gallic acid so that 66.7% of rutin, 34% of naringin, and 19% of gallic acid from the extract were remarkably adsorbed and separated. Besides, adsorption percentage of these materials by GO was considered 74.8% after five cycles of adsorption–desorption process. On the other hand, we carried out batch experiments in order to study the adsorption mechanism of rutin on the GO since rutin was the highest quantity of bioactive substance in lemon peel. Pseudo‐second‐order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm were the best models for describing adsorption process of rutin by GO. Adsorption capacity of rutin by GO was obtained about 21.08 mgg−1. In addition, the physical adsorption of rutin by GO was confirmed by Dubinin–Radushkevich isotherm. This research confirmed that this method for separation of flavonoids is simple and less cost.
