Graph Visualization Styles for Use in Configuration Management: A User Study

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to conduct a user study in order to determine the effect of numerous variables for data representation on the ability to answer questions about the system being represented. This research will be used in the development of a computer-based visualization tool to support configuration change management. The researchers hypothesized that the graph geometry and order of the questions being asked would not affect the results, while the color of the graph and the information being rep… Show more

“…Based on the existing configuration approaches discussed earlier in the work, four support tools are recommended to assist in the configuration management process at the automotive OEM. Prototypes for all tools have been provided to the OEM and have been preliminarily vetted for further refinement and deployment (Phelan, Summer, Pearce and Kurz, 2015a; Phelan, Wilson, Joshua and Mary, 2015, Phelan, 2016; Pearce et al , 2016). In order to support the other tools that are recommended, the first step is to develop an interaction identification tool that will allow the user to view how changes to the rule database will propagate through the system and affect other rules.…”

“…In addition, the researchers are developing a visualization tool to assist in the rule database verification process (Phelan, Wilson, Joshua and Mary, 2015; Phelan, 2016). The visualization tool consists of a dynamic connectivity graph that displays the vehicle options for a specific set of models and maps through connections (by way of rules in the database) between the options.…”

“…The density of the network is the percentage of possible relations that exist in the graph [42], [63], [64]. The representation of the graph density in the matrix form is simply the number of cells populated with a non-zero value divided by the number of possible cells [65].…”
