“…Vitamin C levels in the plasma of patients with periodontal disease were signifi cantly lower than those in the plasma of the healthy subjects. A similar result was observed by Staudte et al [ 78 ], who reported signifi cantly decreased plasma vitamin C levels in patients with chronic periodontitis compared with those in healthy controls. In analysis of 11,480 subjects in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III), Chapple et al [ 20 ] examined the association of serum antioxidant levels with an altered relative risk for periodontal disease and found a strong and consistent inverse association between serum vitamin C levels and the prevalence of periodontitis using multiple logistic regression analysis adjusted for age, sex, race/ethnicity, body mass index, cigarette smoking status, oral contraceptive and hormone replacement therapy use, diabetes, poverty income ratio, and education, with the association being stronger in patients with severe disease.…”

“…No relationship could be demonstrated between the presence or proportion of periodontal micro-organisms and measures of gingival bleeding or ascorbate levels. Staudte et al [ 78 ] examined plasma vitamin C levels and infl ammatory measures in patients with periodontitis before and after the consumption of grapefruit. Fifty-eight patients with chronic periodontitis were assigned to the test group ( n = 38) and a diseased control group ( n = 20) and were compared with 22 healthy subjects.…”

“…Likewise, vitamin C plays a role in collagen synthesis. This is relevant for the maintenance of oral tissue such as the periodontal ligament, the formation of bone matrix, and the integrity of blood vessel walls [28]. Leggott et al [29] found that the GI values decreased after the supplementation period, suggesting that measurements of gingival inflammation are directly related to the ascorbic acid status.…”

“…Aufnahme von Elektronen oxidative Verbindungen inaktiviert. Experimentell ist es gelungen, durch eine Erhöhung der Vitamin-C-Aufnahme die Aktivität sulkulärer Granulozyten bei Patienten mit Parodontitis zu steigern und dadurch die lokale Abwehrlage zu verbessern [20]. Außerdem spielt Vitamin C eine wesentliche Rolle in der Kollagensynthese.…”
