“…The diagnosis of CD is usually made on the basis of histopathologic [16,17], radiologic [22,23], endoscopic [18,21] and clini cal data [24,25], Endoscopy and radiology mainly show mucosal abnormalities, even if bowel wall thickness can be sometimes mea sured on plain film and contrast studies [28]. Abdominal ultrasonography can demon strate an increase in intestinal wall thickness and has been proposed as a simple, noninvasive method in CD, particularly as a possible screening procedure in cases in whom radiologic or endoscopic examinations are con traindicated [1,9] and in follow-up of pa tients.…”

“…In this group 89 subjects had a definite diagnosis of CD (35 with ileal disease, 33 with ileo colic and 21 with colonic location), 57 had UC and 35 were controls (table 1). A definite diagnosis of CD and UC had been established on the basis of histo logic [ 16,17], endoscopic [18][19][20][21], radiologic [22,23] and clinical criteria [24,25]. Activity of disease was mild in 80% of CD and 100% of UC and moderate in 20% of CD [26] and no patient, at the time of US examination, was taking corticosteroids.…”

“…1) and these may coalesce to produce a line of barium parallel to the lumen. Other authors have observed this type of ulcer in ulcerative colitis and in Crohn's disease (Stein, Roy, and Finkelstein, 1968;Marshak and Lindner, 1968).…”

“…Opinions differ as to whether single or double- contrast enema is the radiographic method of choice in examining the large bowel [62][63][64][65][66]. No study has been presented comparing the diagnostic yield of these methods in the same patient, although different series have been compared [62, 66-681. In planning the present investigation, our aim was to perform such a comparison, but this was not feasible for ethical reasons.…”
