Granulocyte colony‐stimulating factor has a sex‐dependent positive effect in the maternal immune activation‐induced autism model

Abstract: Objective: The medical intervention for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is restricted to ameliorating comorbid situations. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is a growth factor that enhances the proliferation, differentiation, and survival of hematopoietic progenitor cells. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the effects of G-CSF in a maternal immune activationinduced autism model. Methods: Sixteen female and six male Wistar adult rats were included in the study. After 21 days, 48 littermate… Show more

“…These findings support the relationship between vitamin D and autism inflammation ( 32 ). Durankus demonstrated the beneficial effect of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) in improving the core symptoms of ASD without serious side effects ( 33 ). Alizadeh reported that miRNAs might regulate targets of ASD-related pathways, such as neuroactive ligand-receptor interactions, 5-hydroxytryptaminergic synapses, calcium signaling, cAMP signaling, and PI3K-Akt signaling pathways ( 34 ).…”

“…The histopathological examinations were performed according to previous descriptions. 32 GFAP immunohistochemistry was performed by primary antibodies against GFAP (Abcam, Inc., Mass, USA; 1/1000) for 24 hours. Olympus BX51 microscope was used for obtaining the histopathological images.…”

“…Recent research has demonstrated the neuroprotective impact of G-CSF treatment, which is due to its high antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic properties [10,11]. In a number of ischemic rodent models, G-CSF has been demonstrated to provide long-term neuroprotection by encouraging somatic growth and improving sensorimotor and neurocognitive skills [70,71].…”

“…In a number of ischemic rodent models, G-CSF has been demonstrated to provide long-term neuroprotection by encouraging somatic growth and improving sensorimotor and neurocognitive skills [70,71]. The neuro-regenerative and neuroprotective properties of G-CSF have also been demonstrated in preclinical studies in a number of neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism, spinal cord injury, cerebral ischemia, PD, and AD [5,10,[72][73][74]. To investigate the possibility of using G-CSF for AD treatment, two different Aβ protein aggregate-induced AD mice models were used.…”
