Security of supply of a number of raw materials is of concern for the European Union; foremost among these are the rare earth elements (REE), which are used in a range of modern technologies. A number of research projects, including the EURARE and ASTER projects, have been funded in Europe to investigate various steps along the REE supply chain. This paper addresses the initial part of that supply chain, namely the potential geological resources of the REE in Europe. Although the REE are not currently mined in Europe, potential resources are known to be widespread, and many are being explored. The most important European resources are associated with alkaline igneous rocks and carbonatites, although REE deposits are also known from a range of other settings. Within Europe, a number of REE metallogenetic belts can be identified on the basis of age, tectonic setting, lithological association and known REE enrichments. This paper reviews those metallogenetic belts and sets them in their geodynamic context. The most well-known of the REE belts are of Precambrian to Palaeozoic age and occur in Greenland and the Fennoscandian Shield. Of particular importance for their REE potential are the Gardar Province of SW Greenland, the Svecofennian Belt and subsequent Mesoproterozoic rifts in Sweden, and the carbonatites of the Central Iapetus Magmatic Province. However, several zones with significant potential for REE deposits are also identified in central, southern and eastern Europe, including examples in the Bohemian Massif, the Iberian Massif, and the Carpathians.

SIMS U-Pb zircon dating of metaigneous rocks of the Nordbreen Nappe from the West Ny-Friesland terrane (Eastern Basement Province of Svalbard) yields crystallization ages of 1,761 ± 4 Ma for a felsic metatuff and 1,373 ± 4 Ma for a metagabbro dyke. The Palaeoproterozoic age of the metatuff is similar to previously obtained ages for various felsic rocks from the study area, whereas the Mesoproterozoic age of the metagabbro has not been thus far documented on Svalbard. However, a similar age pattern has been reported from Northeast Greenland. Therefore, we conclude that the West Ny-Friesland terrane can be correlated with age equivalent units of Northeast Greenland. We also explore similarities and dissimilarities between the study area and other terranes of Svalbard and speculate on regional-scale correlations. Together, the presented new ages provide critical piercing points in palaeogeographic reconstructions of the relatively poorly understood circum-Arctic region. | 519BAZARNIK et Al.

“…Record of Columbia supercontinental cycle related orogens worldwide includes CITZ, ADFB, SMB, and EGMB of India (Bhowmik et al, ; Mukhopadhyay et al, ; Roy & Prasad, ); North orogen of North China; Trans‐Hudson orogen; Penokean orogen; Taltson‐Thelon orogen of Canadian Shield; Trans‐Antarctic orogen of East Antarctica; and Capricorn orogen of Australia (Hou et al, , and references therein; Figure ). The evidence of a long‐lived Grenvillian orogeny around 1.0 Ga is preserved in the eastern part of India in the form of large‐scale syn‐collisional granitic activity and high‐grade metamorphism in the Chotanagpur Granite Gneissic Complex (CGGC). Geochemically, granitoid rocks of CGGC were classified as ferroan, per‐aluminous, and calc‐alkalic to alkali‐calcic S‐type granites which were generated from the anatexis of meta‐sedimentary protolith (khondalite) in a volcanic‐arc to syn‐collisional setting. Relatively high crystallization temperatures (800–850°C for garnetiferous granite gneiss, 770–830°C for megacrystic granite gneiss, and 639–725°C for pink granite) of these rocks were calculated by geothermometric calculations. The REE modelling testified that 40–45% partial melting of the khondalite in H2O undersaturated condition at around 5‐kbar pressure might have given rise to the parent magma of the garnetiferous granite gneiss (GGG). LA‐ICPMS zircon (U–Pb) dating yielded the crystallization ages of the megacrystic granite gneiss (MGG) and pink granite (PG) as ~1.0 Ga, and EPMA monazite (U–Th–total Pb) dating suggested that the GGG was metamorphosed during 1.0 Ga. The 1.0–0.90 Ga age of high‐grade metamorphism and anatexis in the CGGC may be correlated with that in the Rayner Complex–Eastern Ghats Belt in the Indo‐Antarctic sector, which is considered as the result of Indo‐Antarctic collision during the assembly of Rodinia.
