Abstract

Madame Sarah Grand (1854–1943) was a leading figure in the field of late Victorian novels, essays, drama, and poetry that came to be called New Woman literature. In her short stories, novels, and essays, as well as in her political activism, Grand fought for improved educational opportunities for girls and women, rational dress, marriage law reform, suffrage, and health reform. Her two best‐known novels, The Heavenly Twins (1893) and The Beth Book (1897), are often taught in nineteenth‐century British literature and women's literature classes today.
