Gram-scale synthesis of electrochemically oxygenated graphene nanosheets for removal of methylene blue from aqueous solution

Abstract: In this study, oxygenated graphene nanosheets (OGNs) were successfully synthesized using a simple electrochemical exfoliation approach and applied to remove methylene blue (MB) in an aqueous solution. The surface morphology and structure of the OGNs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The adsorption performance of OGNs towards aqueous MB was tested by batch experiments. Results showed that a large number of functiona… Show more

“…The G band at 1488.5 cm − 1 is associated with the graphitic quality of the sample. The presence of the 2D band located at 2630.3 cm − 1 is indicative of the formation of graphene [19,20]. The intensity ratio of the G and 2D band (I G /I 2D ) of the sample is 2.71, which indicates the formation of a few layers [21].…”

“…These dyes are difficult to biodegrade due to their complex chemical nature and structure, and their dispersion in water is persistent [ 2 , 3 ]. The discharge of these dyes into water bodies is harmful to biodiversity and hurts human health [ 4 , 5 , 6 ]. Therefore, it is necessary to provide effective methods for removing dyes from wastewater.…”

“…Although a variety of methods have been applied for the dye removal, the adsorption technique is preferable due to its simplicity, simple unit assembly, high efficiency, and low cost. 4 Rice husk is considered to be the main waste produced in a large amount (e.g., approximately 9 million tons in Vietnam) from the rice industry. 5,6 Burning is the first choice for the treatment of this waste because of its simplicity and the ability to produce energy.…”

“…From the aspect of environmental safety, removing dyestuffs such as RR120 from wastewater is extremely necessary. Although a variety of methods have been applied for the dye removal, the adsorption technique is preferable due to its simplicity, simple unit assembly, high efficiency, and low cost …”
