Erosion poses a significant challenge along the river Subansiri in Assam, India impacting river banks and sediment breakdown. This paper presents a comprehensive study on the identification of soil erosion-susceptible areas in the Subansiri Basin using fuzzy logic modeling and sediment transport index (STI) analysis with emphasis on X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and grain size analysis. The soil erosion map's overall findings showed that the areas it covered were vulnerable to erosion in severe, very high, high, moderate, and low levels. Slope gradients and flow accumulation were used to calculate the STI on the Raster Calculator in ArcGIS. The Sediment Transport Index ranges from 0 to 2770. This study also aims to elucidate the mineral composition and grain size distributions of sediments sourced from the Subansiri river in Assam. Examination of 12 soil samples facilitated the assessment of their mineral composition and size distribution. Sieve analysis unveiled that a predominant 80% of the soil along the Subansiri river constitutes sand, with lesser percentages attributed to silt and clay, following USDA primary classification guidelines. Utilizing XRD methodology, the major crystalline minerals identified in these sands encompassed Quartz, Montmorillonite, Illite, Calcite, and Plagioclase Feldspar Albite. Skewness and kurtosis is also studied to determine the shape and distribution of the soil samples and the values range from 0.25 to 0.70 signifying a fine skewed to very fine skewed and from − 1.16 to -1.93 showing a very platykurtic distribution. Thus, for a thorough investigation of soil erosion, this research provides a novel hybrid methodology that integrates fuzzy logic, STI, XRD and grain size analysis.

Grain-size analysis is a significant descriptive method to determine and evaluate depositional environments and hydrodynamic conditions in addition to classifying sedimentary rocks. In this study, grain-size analysis was conducted using dry-sieving procedures on fourteen representative sandstone samples from the Wasia Formation, a thick water aquifer and a hydrocarbon reservoir. Hydrodynamic conditions and depositional environments were determined using bivariate plots, linear discriminate function (LDF), log probability, and Passega diagram. The results reveal that the lower outcrop section consists of coarse- to medium-grained sandstone with a majority being poorly sorted, while the upper section is made up of medium- to medium-well-sorted fine-grained sandstone units. The sediments have a unimodal distribution of 2∅ (all the lower section) and 3∅ (most of the upper section), while two beds have a bimodal of 2 and 3∅. The lower section has wide range skewness with mainly mesokurtic curves, while the upper section is near-symmetrical to coarse-skewed but mostly leptokurtic. Additionally, log probability plots and the Passega diagram show that the majority of the indicative sediments were transported via one to two saltation levels, while fine-grains were transported via suspension. The results of the LDF method are predominantly indicative of aeolian, marine, and fluvial environments.

This study uses a thorough grain size analysis approach to the depositional environment in the Thamirabarani River basin, specifically in the Srivaikundam district of Tamil Nadu, India. There is a significant lack of research on the depositional settings and sediment features unique to the Thamirabarani River basin, even though there have been numerous sediments studies conducted in other river basins. Consequently, the purpose of this study is to investigate the depositional habitats and sediment characteristics of this area. The majority of the 18 sediment samples were determined to be medium- to fine-grained and poorly sort-able after extensive analysis using granulometric research and sieve methods. The low-energy formation process took place in a largely fine-grained or very fine-grained sandy soil, as indicated by the sediments platykurtic and mesokurtic morphologies. The depositional habitats within the region can be better understood by classifying the soil based on ternary plots of clay, silt, and sand, such as particle distribution curve. Furthermore, comparison with a unified soil classification chart aids in further categorizing the soil types. Soils can be classified and the depositional settings of different landscapes, such as rivers, estuaries, beaches, and aeolian terrains, can be better understood with the use of this comprehensive grain size study. Another interesting aspect of the Thamirabarani River basin sediment movement and deposition is the slow breakdown of rocks, especially feldspar and quartz, as they move through rivers and streams.
