Grain boundary studies in YBCO processed by the liquid phase removal method

Abstract: Results on grain boundary studies performed on high-current YBCO samples processed by melt texturing with the liquid phase removal method are reported. The misorientation of the a-b planes across each boundary (the kink angle) is measured in several samples. The results indicate that a predominantly large number of high-angle grain boundaries are present in these samples. The high current transport capacity of these bulk polycrystalline samples indicates that the liquid phase removal method is capable of produ… Show more

“…Therefore, boundary control techniques to fabricate large samples by a simple and economic heat treatment are receiving more interest [6][7][8][9][10]. Joining and multiseeding techniques [6,7,10] have been already tried in attempt to make clean and electronically transparent grain boundaries.…”

“…In the latter case, a critical current density of ∼10 4 A cm −2 was reported across the boundary in zero magnetic field. Also, with the liquid removal method [8,9], a critical current density of ∼10 4 A cm −2 was obtained in spite of the existence of high-angle grain boundaries. Grain boundaries in YBCO superconductors are known as weak links in current transportation because of the short coherence length.…”
