Grafting: a potential method to reveal the differential accumulation mechanism of secondary metabolites

Abstract: Plant secondary metabolites have a great contribution to the agricultural and pharmaceutical industries. Their accumulation is determined by the integrated transport of target compounds and their biosynthesis-related RNA, protein, or DNA. However, it is hard to track the movement of these biomolecules in vivo. Grafting may be an ideal method to solve this problem. The differences of genetic and metabolic backgrounds in rootstock and scion make it feasible to determine the movement of target compounds, RNAs, pr… Show more

“…In plants, the investigation of how environmental factors affect the production of secondary metabolites is an ongoing pursuit due to their close relationships with plant growth and development [ 1 ]. Plant secondary metabolites are usually defense compounds responding to various biotic and abiotic stresses [ 2 ]. Secondary metabolites produced by medicinal plants are important beneficial compounds for many reasons, and their effects on human health have garnered significant attention [ 3 ].…”

“…Manipulation of the defense mechanism of cannabis plants is crucial as it can lead to changes in the content of secondary metabolites [ 69 ]. Grafting has been shown to influence biosynthetic pathways and their accumulation [ 39 , 70 ]. There are several transport and signaling mechanisms between the rootstock and the scion that promote shoot adaptation to stress factors through the transport of signaling molecules involved in the plant defence mechanism.…”

“…Consequently, the leaves of tobacco growing on an eggplant rootstock had lower alkaloid contents compared with those of the non‐grafted tobacco. In addition, grafting serves as an important method for studying mechanisms associated with the transport of secondary metabolites (Dong et al, 2022 ).…”
