Graft polymerization of methyl methacrylate onto guar gum with ceric ammonium sulfate/dextrose redox pair

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The effect of different reaction conditions on the grafting of methyl methacrylate (MMA) onto guar gum (GG) has been studied in detail. The grafting efficiency was optimal under the following conditions: MMA at 1.13 mol/L; ceric ammonium sulfate at 6.32 ϫ 10 Ϫ3 mol/L; dextrose monohydrate at 2.428 ϫ 10 Ϫ3 mol/L; GG at 4 g/L; temperature at 50°C; and time at 210 min. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used for the confirmation of copolymer formation. Thermogravimetric analysis of GG and a repr… Show more

“…Grafting of unsaturated monomers on to guar gum, though not as thoroughly investigated as in the case of more abundant polysaccharides such as starch and cellulose, was previously studied. Grafting of acrylamide [3][4][5], acrylic acid [6], methyl methacrylate [7] on to guar gum was reported. Grafting of acrylonitrile is interesting because it leads to anionic grafts, which are useful in applications such as water retention and metal complexation.…”

“…The appearance of the characteristics peak at 1735 cm -1 is probably due to the presence of saturated ester group. 4,12 The presence of ester group in the grafted polymer provides a substantial evidence of graft polymerization of methyl methacrylate onto gum (methyl methacrylate, an alpha beta-unsaturated ester, produces saturated ester on grafting, Eq. 9).…”

“…Many investigations have been carried out on grafting of vinyl monomers onto guar gum and partially carboxymethyled guar gum using various redox pairs. However, reports on photo‐grafting of vinyl monomers onto sodium salt of partially carboxymethylated guar gum are scanty .…”
