Gracilibacillus lacisalsi sp. nov., a halophilic Gram-positive bacterium from a salt lake in China

Abstract: Two Gram-positive, motile, rod-shaped, halophilic bacteria showing optimum growth at 5-7 % (w/v) NaCl were isolated from a salt lake, Xin-Jiang Province, China. The strains, designated BH312 T and BH314, grew in the presence of 1-18 % (w/v) NaCl and at temperatures of 15-50 6C (optimum: 40 6C) and pH values of 5.5-10.0 (optimum: pH 7.5-8.0). The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C 15 : 0 , iso-C 15 : 0 and anteiso-C 17 : 0 . The DNA G+C content was 38.8-39.0 mol% and the predominant lipoquinone was MK-7.… Show more

“…This genus of endospore-forming rods encompasses seven moderately halophilic species that grow at NaCl concentrations from 1% to 20% (Lim et al, 2005;Chen et al, 2009Chen et al, , 2010Huang et al, 2015), although some strains of Pontibacillus marinus are able to grow up to 30% of salinity (Sass et al, 2008). Strains of this genus have been isolated from salt lakes (Hua et al, 2008, Jeon et al, 2008Daas et al, 2017), saline soils (Yang et al, 2011;Lee et al, 2015), and deep-sea hypersaline anoxic sediments (DHALs) of the Mediterranean Sea (Sass et al, 2008). DHALs also harbour a high concentration of magnesium and sulfate and are considered to be one of the most extreme hypersaline systems in the planet (La Cono et al, 2011, 2019Yakimov et al, 2013).…”

“…In most species, cells are motile due to peritrichous flagella and form endospores and white colonies (Wainø et al., ). Gracilibacillus species were isolated from diverse salty environmental samples, including sea water, salty lakes (Gao et al., ; Jeon et al., ), soil (Chen et al., ; Huo, Xu, Cui, & Wu, ), and/or food (Chamroensaksri et al., ; Diop et al., ).…”

“…This genus includes 12 species ( www.bacterio.net ) described with valid published names ( 7 ). Members of the genus Gracilibacillus are salty environmental bacteria isolated most often from soil ( 8 ), food ( 9 ), lakes and salty sea water ( 10 , 11 ).…”
