GPS-derived Deformation of the Central Andes Including the 1995 Antofagasta M w = 8.0 Earthquake

Abstract: In order to study both the interplate seismic loading cycle and the distribution of intraplate deformation of the Andes, a 215 site GPS network covering Chile and the western part of Argentina was selected, monumented and observed in 1993 and 1994. A dense part of the network in northern Chile and northwest Argentina, comprising some 70 sites, was re-observed after two years in October/November, 1995. “…De este modo este alzamiento estaría vinculado a algún proceso responsable de la convergencia de la placa de Nazca bajo la Sudamericana como lo son los terremotos de subducción. En la zona de la península de Mejillones, 500 km al norte del área de estudio, también se reconocen líneas de paleocostas y la parte sur de esta península, fue afectada por el terremoto de Antofagasta Mw=8,1 de mecanismo inverso, que produjo un alzamiento centimétrico en la parte sur de esta península (Ruegg et al, 1996;Klotz et al, 1999), y gran parte de ese alzamiento se recuperó en los tres años siguientes a ese terremoto (Chlieh et al, 2004 de 1995 (Beck et al, 1998).
