Abstract: Acknowledgements:We are grateful for the financial support from the Norwegian Research Council and NTNU, project 10354331 that made this special feature possible. We also thank Tim Bartley, Tom Evans, Daniel Cole, and Jerome Busemeyer for suggesting possible contributors to this special feature. Obviously, this project would not have materialized without the generous response of all contributing authors and the help we received from numerous reviewers. Thank you all.

“…Governance in essence is about solving collective action dilemmas (see Olson, 1965). It is recognized in the literature that this, in broad strokes, can be done through government regulation, privatization or self-governance arrangements Berge and Van Laerhoven, 2011). Moreover, stakeholders do not always have the capacity to help solve problems that have physical, biological, and social dimensions (Hall and Lazarus 2015;Bozeman 2007).…”

Cox et al (2010) analyzed no less than 91 recent case studies, including irrigation systems, groundwater basins, and fisheries, as well as many cases of forest management, and this resulted in only very minor modifications of the original design principles formulated two decades earlier.…”
