Goss's Bacterial Blight and Wilt of Corn Caused by Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. nebraskensis Occurs in Minnesota

Abstract: Goss's bacterial wilt and blight caused by Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. nebraskensis (Vidaver and Mandel) Davis et al. can be an economically significant disease of corn (Zea mays L.) (1). Corn hybrids with typical leaf and wilt symptoms of Goss's bacterial blight were observed in two western Minnesota fields in Chippewa and Stephens counties in August 2009. Disease incidence was estimated at 40% in one field and 90% in the other. Symptoms consisted of large, tan-to-gray, linear lesions with irregular marg… Show more

“…Goss's wilt and blight was first discovered in the 1960s but has not been a major disease across the U.S. Corn Belt until recent years and was identified in Minnesota only since 2009 (Malvick et al, 2010). As a result, resistance to GWB has not been an important trait in maize breeding programs and genes for GWB resistance have not been mapped.…”

“…Goss's bacterial wilt and blight, caused by Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. Nebraskensis, has been recently reported to be expanding into new areas of the United States, including Indiana, Minnesota, Texas, North Dakota, Nebraska, and Missouri for the first time, with the disease incidence estimated as 40% to 90% (Ruhl et al, 2009;Malvick et al, 2010;Korus et al, 2011;Friskop et al, 2014;Hosack et al, 2016). This disease was also reported as spreading into Alberta, Canada with an average incidence of approximately 10%-25% (Howard et al, 2015).…”
