Good farm practices and improved processing technology of enset for sustainable hunger solution in Ethiopia

Abstract: Given the multi-benefits, enset cultivation has been continuously underutilized in Ethiopia. We assess best practices, processing technologies, environmental maintenance, multi-benefits of enset and its potency in hunger reduction in Ethiopia by reviewing evidence on good farm practices, improved technologies, sustainability, hunger reduction, inputs cost, and yields advantage of enset. The review results identify those best practices that optimize enset yield, technologies that facilitate extension services, … Show more

“…From those factors, a disease that is caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses, and nematodes is the most severe biological problem. Among these, bacterial wilt of enset is the most determinant constraint on enset production (Kudama, Tolera, and Gebeyehu, 2022). Bacterial wilt of enset, caused by Xanthomonas campestris PV.…”

“…But the development policy attention given to the commodity is weak that limits its optimal use. The listed constraints posing Enset cultivation to be underutilized and confined to the southwest part of the country were cultural perceptions, politics, historical reasons, and less research and policy support (Gezahagn et al, 2022). The table above illustrates that root and tuber crops are the cheapest source of energy for the farming community and needs policy support for further development and utilization.…”
