Abstract. The study involved 50 insemination boars at the age of 8–9 months at the beginning of the study. Each boar was assessed four times for its sexual activity: at the beginning of breeding service and after three, six and nine months into the insemination service. Ejaculates were collected for the purpose of the sexual activity parameters’ assessment. Physical parameters of the ejaculates were subsequently analysed. Pearson’s linear correlation was used to calculate the coefficients of a phenotypic correlation between sexual activity levels and physical parameters of the ejaculates. According to this an appropriate analysis was conducted concerning the changes in boars’ sexual activity throughout their dynamic, sexual development. It was proved, that ejaculate volume depends on the total time of copulation. The highest correlation between ejaculate volume and sexual urge levels was observed in the youngest boars at the beginning of insemination service. The correlation between the ejaculatory efficiency and a boar’s libido changes with age and sexual development. Changes in ejaculatory efficiency are the most dynamic at the age of approx. 1.5 years. At this age ejaculate volume and ejaculate sperm count dynamically increase. The insemination fitness forecasting in case of boars should include libido measurements taken at the beginning of an insemination service – within the first three months. Measurements taken at a more advanced age are of little use for the purpose of ejaculatory efficiency forecasting in case of boars.

Streszczenie. W niniejszej pracy podjęto próbę oceny międzyrasowej i wewnątrzrasowej zmienności ejakulatów oraz morfologii, wymiarów i kształtu plemników knurów inseminacyjnych. Podstawowe cechy ejakulatów cechuje relatywnie duża zmienność wewnątrzrasowa i międzyrasowa. Ejakulaty knurów ras Landrace i Large White mają wyraźnie większą objętość niż ejakulaty knurów rasy Duroc oraz mieszańców Duroc × Pietrain, a ejakulaty knurów rasy Landrace zawierają więcej plemników niż ejakulaty knurów innych ras. Plemniki knurów mieszańców wykazują mniejszą ruchliwość niż plemniki knurów innych ras. W ejakulatach knurów wszystkich ras stwierdzono bardzo małą frekwencję plemników ze zmianami głównymi i podrzędnymi. Frekwencję zmian morfologicznych plemników cechuje bardzo duża zmienność wewnątrzrasowa, przy stosunkowo małej zmienności międzyrasowej. Wymiary morfometryczne plemników cechuje mała zmienność wewnątrzrasowa, przy relatywnie dużej zmienności międzyrasowej. Plemniki knurów rasy Landrace mają wyraźnie dłuższe witki oraz większe pole powierzchni główki niż plemniki knurów innych ras.

The aim of the study was to determine the effect of growth rate and lean meat content in Pietrain×Duroc and Duroc×Pietrain hybrid boars on their semen characteristics. On the basis of the results of performance testing carried out on the 180 th day of life, the boars were divided into four groups according to their daily weight gain (I: 750-800 g; II: 801-850 g; III: 851-900 g; and IV: >900 g), and additionally into three groups according to lean meat content (I: 60-61%; II: 62-63%; and III: >63%). Ejaculates were evaluated for the following characteristics: volume, sperm concentration, percentage of sperm with progressive movement, number of sperm with progressive movement per ejaculate and per insemination dose, primary morphological defects and number of insemination doses obtained per ejaculate. Neither high daily weight gain in the hybrid boars during the rearing period nor their high lean meat content had a negative effect on their semen characteristics.
