Gold nanoparticles supported on titanium dioxide: an efficient catalyst for highly selective synthesis of benzoxazoles and benzimidazoles

Abstract: A highly efficient and selective reaction for the synthesis of 2-substituted benzoxazoles and benzimidazoles catalyzed by Au/TiO2 has been developed via two hydrogen-transfer processes. This reaction has a good tolerance to air and water, a wide substrate scope, and represents a new avenue for practical C-N and C-O bond formation. More importantly, no additional additives, oxidants and reductants are required for the reaction and the catalyst can be recovered and reused readily.

“…Gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) have received increasing attention in the past decades because of their chemical inertness, biocompatibility, as well as unique optical and catalytic properties [1][2][3][4]. Surface chemical functionalization of Au-NPs with tactical molecules not only effectively prevents their aggregation but also largely expands their potential applications in various fields such as optical devices, bioimaging, biological labeling, sensors, and catalysis, owing to the synergistic effect between functional molecules and Au-NPs [5][6][7][8][9][10].…”

“…Very recently the Ag/TiO 2 NPs were applied for an analogous synthesis from aldehydes and carboxylic acids derivatives in water. Recently 2‐arylbenzoxazoles were synthesized in a one‐pot tandem procedure from o ‐nitrophenols and benzyl alcohols under dppf catalysis or catalysis by gold NPs supported on titanium oxide .…”
