Lode‐gold mineralization in the Bétaré Oya gold district is related to a series of quartz–sulphide veins that define a steeply dipping NNE–SSW‐trending brittle–ductile shear zone. The veins transect metasedimentary sequences in the vicinity of small granitic intrusions. Quartz veins range from barren (massive quartz) to mineralized with textures that vary from foliated, sheared, vuggy, fractured, and sugary to brecciated with inclusions of altered wall rock. They contain gold, pyrite, and galena in addition to chalcopyrite and both hypogene and supergene haematite and covellite. Parameters that consistently define primary gold mineralization in the area include silicification, sulphidation, sericitization, K‐feldspar alteration, haematitization, and carbonatization. Gold grains recovered from heavy mineral concentrate and grains that occur as inclusions in pyrite were characterized by microchemical methods. The gold grains are zoned and exhibit a simple internal structure of partly deformed and leached rims and high‐purity intragranular veinlets. Gold is alloyed with Ag; gold fineness varies between 859 and 877 in the core and from 958 to 997 in the leached rims. Inclusions of gold in pyrite cluster between 875 and 900. Pyrite has up to 0.59 wt% Au, and other trace elements occur in low quantities but for Pb (0.13 wt%), Ag (1.36 wt%), and Sb (1.63 wt%). The bulk trace element signature of the veins is characterized by Au, Ag, As, Bi, Ba, Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb, Sb, Sr, V, W, Zn, and Zr. This depicts a geochemical association of Au ± Cu ± Bi ± As ± Pb. The occurrence of Au as well as elevated Pb and Zn could suggest a granitic source for the ore‐bearing fluid. The auriferous quartz veins are characterized by a widespread in δ34S from 2.8 to 14.9‰ pointing to multiple sources of sulphur in the system, perhaps a mixture of sulphur from the metasedimentary and the granitic rocks.

To assess the water quality in the locality of Bétaré-Oya affected by an intensive artisanal and semi mechanized mining activities, 71 samples were collected from sixteen points during the 2015-2016 hydrological year. These points include: three in Lom river which is the main stream of the study area, five in Mari river which is one of the left bank tributaries of the Lom, in Bétaré-Oya and eight in the left and the right bank of Mari. Different physicochemical parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity (EC), alkalinity, turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS), cyanide (CN − ), major elements and heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Cd, Fe, Cu, As, Mn and Cr) were analyzed. Water Quality Indices (WQI), Heavy metal Pollution Index (HPI), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) and percent sodium (Na%) were also computed to evaluate the suitability of water for drinking and irrigation. The results showed that the surface water from Bétaré-Oya was acidic to basic (5.40 < pH < 8.84), weakly mineralized (11.60 < EC < 122.10 μS/cm) with a high concentration of TSS (2 < TSS < 8996.00 mg/L) and turbidity (1.22 to 4758.00 NTU). The WQI scores show excellently to unsuitable quality in almost all the sampling sites. The water quality is found to be most deteriorated in Lom river and in the downstream of Mari river where an extensive mining activity is carried out, with the high WQI value of 5137.40. Based on heavy metal pollution index, the mean value was 1195.36 and thus under the critical pollution index. We thus notice a serious physical degradation by organic and mineral suspended particles as well as chemical degradation by heavy metals. This results from mining activities in the Lom river and its main tributaries such as the Mari river in the upstream part of the Sanaga basin. According to the percentage of sodium and SAR, these waters can be used for irrigation purposes in almost all types of soils.

The Batouri area is located in the Adamawa-Yade domain in East Cameroon region, and has a high geological potential as a host for gold deposits. It is covered by thick forest where outcrops are sometime scarce. The purpose of this study is to generate and combine different geological information which makes up the specificity of the Batouri gold District, in order to contribute to the better knowledge of its geological setting. From satellite imageries, GIS tools and field data; lithological units, lineament and density maps have been dressed at regional-scale of 1/400.000. The mapping has enabled the discovery of spatial and topologic relationships between shear zones, lineaments, gold occurrences and often mineralized granitic intrusions. According to the field data, lithological and lineament maps, the lithology of the Batouri gold District is characterized by alkali granitoids (tonalite, granodiorite, syenomonzo-granite, alkaline granite) hosted by orthogneisses and migmatites as gold mineralization hosts; while the lineaments show a major shear zones trending NE-SW defined by presence of mylonites. The shear zones crosscut all lithologies, mostly granodiorite where majority of gold occurrences is observed; locally, nearest these shear zones, rocks are transformed to the mylonites and gold is concentrated along. From density map, it is shown that the high gold mineralization zone corresponds to highest lineaments density. All those data suggest that gold mineralization in the Batouri district is controlled by tectonic and lithology. It is conclusive that Batouri gold deposit is epigenetic gold set emplaced in orogenic setting, during the post-collisional stage of the Central African Fold Belt (CAFB) and the Congo Craton (CC).
