Going Overboard: How Ironic Group Style Becomes Political on an Anonymous Imageboard

Abstract: Anonymous online groups such as imageboards have increasing cultural influence. Recently, they have been connected with far-right political movements. This mixed-methods study investigates politics on Overboard, a Finnish imageboard. We use a convolutional neural network to learn linguistic features of the community’s own understanding of politics, studying two large text corpora, collected in 2014–2015 and 2018–2019. This enables us to find political messages in nominally non-political subforums and discount … Show more

“…In particular, the contents on 4chan ’s political board (/pol/) have shown strong far-right personalities and openly anti-semitic rhetoric, which are often delivered through internet memes. Similar findings have been made for another board (/b/) on 4chan , as well as other imageboard platforms, such as Overboard (Ylä-Anttila et al, 2020) and Danbooru (Britt, 2019).…”

“…Väkivaltaiseksi toiseuttavaksi verkkokeskusteluksi tunnistan sisällöt, jotka oikeuttavat tai normalisoivat väkivaltaa, kuvaavat toiseuttamisen kohdetta fyysisen väkivallan uhrina tai käsittelevät erilaisia ihmisryhmiä epäinhimillistävillä tavoilla (Bailey et al 2021, 2-4;Dunn 2021). Ylilaudalla tällaista sisältöä on huomattavan laajasti (Kettunen & Paukkeri 2021;Vaahensalo 2021c;Vainikka 2020;Ylä-Anttila et al 2020).

“…Inspired by Poe’s Law, communication in such fora strives towards excessive irony such that it is unclear whether any user’s missives should be taken at face value or not. In these contexts, the collapse of clear distinctions between sincerity and comedy is an aspiration of – rather than an impediment to – online communication (Ylä-Anttila et al, 2020: 7). In its most extreme manifestations, this tendency can even lead to doubts regarding not only clarity of interpretation, but also the singularity of intention: whether contributors themselves even know whether they’re joking or not (Milner, 2016: 143).…”
