“…The two anomalous supercells discussed in this study were sampled during local research operations on 10 April 2009 and as part of the Verification of the Origins of Rotation in Supercells EXperiment‐SouthEast (VORTEX‐SE, Rasmussen, 2015) and the Geostationary Operational Experiment Satellite‐Series R Post Launch Test (GOES‐R PLT, Padula et al, 2017) Intensive Observations Periods (IOPs) on 22 April 2017 in northern AL and southern Tennessee (TN). In each case, total lightning data from the North Alabama Lightning Mapping Array (NALMA, Blakeslee, 2019; Carey & Blakeslee, 2020; Koshak et al, 2004; Rison et al, 1999), the polarimetric C‐band Advanced Radar for Meteorological and Operational Research (ARMOR, Carey & Knupp, 2017; Carey & Blakeslee, 2020; Mecikalski et al, 2015), and the S‐band operational Weather Surveillance Radar—1988 Doppler (WSR‐88D, Crum & Alberty, 1993; Doviak et al, 2000; NOAA National Weather Service (NWS) Radar Operations Center, 1991) KHTX were utilized.…”

“…The GOES‐R PLT field campaign included flights during both day and night (Padula et al., 2017); however, NO 2 columns from GCAS are only obtainable during daylight storm overpasses. Daytime flights included March 21 over California, April 20 in the vicinity of Lake Erie, April 22 over Alabama, May 8 over Colorado, May 12 over Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the northern Gulf of Mexico, and May 14 over the western Atlantic east of Kennedy Space Flight Center.…”

“…Two normal supercell thunderstorms were observed on February 6, 2008 and April 11, 2008 and two anomalous supercells were observed on April 10, 2009 and April 22, 2017 in North AL and South Central Tennessee (TN). Total lightning and radar observations of the supercells of interest to this study were obtained either during local research operations (February 6, 2008, April 11, 2008, and April 10, 2009 cases) or larger multi‐agency field projects (April 22, 2017 case, Padula et al., 2017; Rasmussen, 2015). This study expands upon the work of Stough and Carey (2020) in which the environments and spatial and temporal aspects of the co‐evolving electrical, kinematic, and microphysical structures of the anomalous storms were documented in detail.…”
