Background: A promise of SOA is to make business processes be quickly adapted to organizations dynamic through flexible software. For this, it is essential to have a support for services identification in order to meet the business goals. However, many available services found on the web environment are too specific and can hardly be reused in different applications. This happens because there is a lack of systematic approaches to support generic services identification in a systematic way. Objective: To present a strategy for identifying generic services that support business processes. The identification is supported by Goal Diagrams and Business Process Models and is composed by a set of guidelines which assist the domain engineer in extracting the services. The identified services are generic enough to be reused in similar applications of a specific domain. Methodology: To elaborate the proposed strategy some domain-specific business processes were analyzed, aiming at extracting key tasks and turning them into generic web services. This analysis was supported by an extended version of goal diagrams (GTR) and conventional BPM models. Results: As a proof-of-concept we applied the strategy for identifying services in the planning processes domain and we developed a real e-gov web portal based on the identified services. The web portal was used successfully by two different schools for elaborating their planning processes. Conclusion: We claim that the strategy is generic and can be applied to other business processes providing software suitability to the organization dynamics. In addition, it can be potentially reused with services in different instances of the same business process.

Due to the rapid expansion of web applications, the information and services provided on the web have proliferated, leading to ever-increasing complexity. This has not only resulted in the utmost significance of information quality and accuracy on the web, but has also necessitated that access to information be improved. Hence, adaptive web systems have emerged, which focus on adapting web content, presentation, and navigation to meet the needs of the users according to their individual circumstances and preferences. In this field, focus has gradually shifted from creation of new adaptive techniques to solving the problems of analysis and design of adaptive applications; in other words, it has become important to handle the dynamism of the runtime environment and the complexity involved in developing these applications. Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) is considered a promising approach for overcoming these problems, mainly due to its modeling features: Models are created at different levels of abstraction (thus enhancing complexity management), and the process can potentially be automated through the use of transformation rules. We provide a review of several prominent methodologies that utilize MDE for developing adaptive web applications, and propose a criteria-based evaluation approach that highlights their strengths and weaknesses. Evaluation results can be used for comparing and selecting methodologies for use in web development projects; they can also be used for constructing a new methodology that exploits the strengths and addresses the shortcomings of existing methodologies.

It is a proved fact that the appropriate management of requirements is one of the most influential factors in the success of software development projects. With the advent of the model-driven engineering (MDE) development paradigm, the need for formal gathering mechanisms, which provide the necessary degree of nonambiguity and detail, has led to the proposal of a myriad of requirements metamodels. However, a great disparity exists, both in the concepts/relationships and in the underlying semantics involved in each metamodel. Moreover, most existing proposals lack backward (e.g., alignment with business goals) or forward (e.g., connection with validation methods) traceability. In view of this situation, this article proposes a "measurable requirements metamodel" that offers support to the elicitation of measurable requirements. This support is based on the explicit connection of goals, requirements, and measures, thus fostering a goal-driven measurable requirements engineering (RE) perspective. Additionally, since it is well known that metamodels only reflect the abstract syntax of the modeling language, the proposed metamodel also includes a notation (concrete syntax) which, for reasons of understandability, is based on the goal-oriented requirements language (GRL) notation. This notation is supported by a unified modeling language (UML) profile that facilitates its adoption by RE analysts in the context of any UML-based software engineering process.
