Glycosylation on proteins of the intestine and perimicrovillar membrane of Triatoma (Meccus) pallidipennis, under different feeding conditions

Abstract: Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, interacts with molecules in the midgut of its insect vector to multiply and reach the infective stage. Many studies suggest that the parasite binds to midgut-specific glycans. We identified several glycoproteins expressed in the intestine and perimicrovillar membrane (PMM) of Triatoma (Meccus) pallidipennis under different feeding conditions. In order to assess changes in protein-linked glycans, we performed lectin and immunoblot analyses on glycoprotei… Show more

“…Some proteins were detected by using a single technique [ 15 , 18 , 23 , 43 , 46 , 48 , 55 , 57 , 65 , 66 ], whilst up to four complementary techniques were used in combination to identify, quantify, detect the activity of, and demonstrate the presence of certain proteins [ 51 ] ( Figure 8 ).…”

“…Taxonomy is a fundamental science for the entomo-epidemiology of Chagas disease, because correctly classifying triatomines can assist in the activity of vector control programs [ 28 ]. Even though since 2014 the generic status of the species grouped in Meccus has been changed to Triatoma , several authors continued publishing articles using the Meccus nomenclature as valid [ 20 , 29 46 ] and, quite mistakenly, as Triatoma ( Meccus ) pallidipennis [ 47 49 ]—since Meccus after the genus Triatoma (between parentheses) represents a subgenus and, so far, there are no valid subgenera in the subfamily Triatominae.…”
