Glycohistochemistry of the Tilapia spp. stomach

Abstract: A histochemical study using conventional and lectin methods was performed on the stomach of fasting and feeding adults of Tilapia spp. A battery of HRP-conjugated lectins combined with exoglycosidase digestion was used. The differences found in the epithelium, gastric pits and gastric glands between fasting and feeding subjects were related to the functional stages of the organ. Carbohydrate composition was also compared with that of mammals and birds. 1996 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles

“…Os testes revelaram a presença de GPs neutras e ácidas no terço superior das células cilíndricas superficiais. Estas GPs, produzidas pelas células epiteliais, podem proteger a mucosa do ácido contido no estômago (SCOCCO et al, 1996;MORRISON & WRIGHT-JR., 1999).…”

“…The aim of the present study was to take a multidisciplinary approach and to integrate the expertise of histochemists (Scocco et al, 1996(Scocco et al, , 1997(Scocco et al, , 1998 with that of biochemists (Ius et al, 1993). This was in order to directly visualize the phthalate esters occurrence in the alimentary canal of a polyhybrid of Tilapia spp.…”

“…This corroborates other researches indicating that in some fish species digestion starts in the oesophagus and continues in the stomach (DOMENEGHINI et al, 1998). Likewise, the high level of histochemical complexity in the oesophagus could be related to the absence of salivary glands (SCOCCO et al, 1996). It's important to notice that digestion in mammals starts in the mouth, due to the presence of secretion from the salivary glands.…”
