Controlled release systems were developed using biodegradable polymers/ copolymers via polycondensation of glycerol with acids (citric, adipic, and succinic) with potassium chloride (KCl) 0, 10, 20, and 40 wt% followed by crosslinking at 120 C. Polymers were characterized by thermogravimetry, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and UV-Vis spectroscopy. All are thermally stable up to 200 C, therefore suitable for release in countries where temperatures reach 50 C. Fractographic analysis showed rubbery (rough and ductile) and hard (smooth and brittle) polymers depending on the acid used. The release profiles showed that hydrophilic (polar) polymers are easily hydrolyzed, generating faster release reaching 52% in 120 h. Less polar polymers delay KCl release below 20% at the same time. Therefore, it was possible to adjust the release by controlling the fertilizer content and the type of polymer, designing a fast or slow release to meet the needs of a given crop.

In the present work, a statistical optimization of a sustainable coating for core–shell NPK (Nitrogen–Phosphorus–Potassium) fertilizers was investigated. The environmental green coating was enriched in nitrogen using a biomass and renewable source, namely the nitrogen rich fraction of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) (Hermetia Illucens, Diptera: Stratiomyidae) reared on vegetable waste. A rational approach was proposed with the aim of calculating the best formulation of the coating, considering both its manufacturing behavior, such as adhesion to the core, and its physical properties, such as homogeneity or plasticity. From a circular economy perspective, together with the nitrogen-rich fraction from BSFL (from 51 to 90 wt.%), water and glycerol were considered for the coating formulation in different proportion: from 10 to 32 wt.% and from 0 to 17 wt.% respectively. The Design of Experiments technique was implemented to limit the total number of tests for the coating formulation (18 tests). ANOVA was employed, with the aim of obtaining mathematical models to derive a better precise and objective formulation. The results show that the use of glycerol can be avoided, as well as only a limited amount of water (11 wt.%) is necessary to obtain an optimized coating formulation, thereafter, satisfying the more relevant technological and physical properties for the coating manufacturing.

Adhesive Interfaces toward a Zero-Waste Industry

This Feature Article evaluates ongoing efforts to adapt adhesives toward the goal of zero-waste living and suggests the most promising future directions. Adhesives are not always considered in zero-waste manufacturing because they represent only a small fraction of a product and offer no additional functionality. However, their presence restricts the reintegration of constituent parts into a circular economy, so a new generation of adhesives is required. Furthermore, their production often leads to harmful pollutants. Here, two main approaches toward addressing these problems are considered: first, the use of natural materials that replace petroleum-based polymers from which conventional adhesives are made and second, the production of dismantlable adhesives capable of debonding on demand with the application of an external stimulus. These approaches, either individually or combined, offer a new paradigm in zero-waste industrial production and consumer applications.
