Gluteal Muscle Atrophy and Increased Intramuscular Lipid Concentration Are Not Mitigated by Daily Artificial Gravity Following 60-Day Head-Down Tilt Bed Rest

Abstract: Exposure to spaceflight and head-down tilt (HDT) bed rest leads to decreases in the mass of the gluteal muscle. Preliminary results have suggested that interventions, such as artificial gravity (AG), can partially mitigate some of the physiological adaptations induced by HDT bed rest. However, its effect on the gluteal muscles is currently unknown. This study investigated the effects of daily AG on the gluteal muscles during 60-day HDT bed rest. Twenty-four healthy individuals participated in the study: eight … Show more

“…However, machine learning has the potential to make the analyses of larger data sets more feasible, increasing the statistical power of future research and facilitating the translation of these measures to clinical practice. Although in their infancy, automated, machine learning methods around the lateral hip muscles have shown to provide reliable data for size and the ability to quantify fatty infiltration and will aid future research [ 26 , 48 , 52 , 61 , 91 , 120 , 121 ].…”

“…A limitation of this work is that we assessed the impact of cycling only in the gluteal muscles, which is an important muscle group associated with good mobility and a reduced risk of falls in the elder population [ 41 , 42 ], but further research is needed to study if this muscle group is representative of the overall muscle health of middle-aged individuals. A second limitation of this study is that the two groups were recruited according to their current levels of physical activity.…”

“…There are a number of smaller facilities such as the Analogue Astronaut Training Center (AATC) [49], however the main urban-based centers are located in the United States, Russia, and Germany. [46,51]. The center hosts a number of additional capabilities, including confinement simulation [52].…”
