Glutaraldehyde collagen cross‐linking stabilizes resin–dentin interfaces and reduces bond degradation

Abstract: This study evaluated the stability of resin-dentin interfaces treated with glutaraldehyde-containing agents, and assessed collagen degradation in dentin matrices treated with Gluma. Microtensile bond strength (μTBS) was evaluated 24 h and 6 months after treatment with three desensitizers (Gluma Desensitizer, Gluma Desensitizer Power Gel, and MicroPrime G) and two etch-and-rinse adhesives (Comfort Bond & Desensitizer and iBond TE). Demineralized beams of human dentin were treated with water or Gluma, and the de… Show more

“…A total of 50 articles were included in the qualitative analysis. Of these, 5 articles were not considered for the meta-analysis because two of them did not express the BS data as means and SDs [ 76 , 77 ], and in 3 articles the number of specimens used could not be retrieved [ 78 , 79 , 80 ], totalling 45 articles considered for the quantitative analysis [ 17 , 81 , 82 , 83 , 84 , 85 , 86 , 87 , 88 , 89 , 90 , 91 , 92 , 93 , 94 , 95 , 96 , 97 , 98 , 99 , 100 , 101 , 102 , 103 , 104 , 105 , 106 , 107 , 108 , 109 , 110 , 111 , 112 , 113 , 114 , 115 , 116 , 117 , 118 , 119 , 120 , 121 , 122 , 123 , 124 , 125 ]. “…It is an alcoholic solution that contains three resin monomers (HEMA, UDMA, and 4-META), two organic acids (polyacrylic and maleic) and 5% glutaraldehyde as desensitizer agent 24 . In dentistry, besides desensitizer agent, glutaraldehyde has been used in many different ways such as antibacterial, cross-linker agent, and MMPs inhibitor in order to increase the resistance of collagen fibrils against enzymatic degradation [24][25][26] . Its ability as MMPs inhibitor and cross-linker agent may have played an important role to maintain the stability of the dentin μTBS after one year 27,28 .…”

“…Glutaraldehyde is an effective dentin adhesive for enhancement of the bond strength of dentin and resin. 22,23 However, the clinical applications of glutaraldehyde are greatly limited by its toxicity; thus, there is an urgent need for less toxic alternatives. Some natural products with low toxicity have been shown to exhibit biological functions that could enhance dentin strength and dentin collagen cross-linking, thereby attracting attention from researchers.…”
