Glutamine Synthesis in the Developing Porcine Placenta1

Abstract: Glutamine plays a vital role in fetal carbon and nitrogen metabolism and exhibits the highest fetal:maternal plasma ratio among all amino acids in pigs. Such disparate glutamine levels between mother and fetus suggest that glutamine may be actively synthesized and released into the fetal circulation by the porcine placenta. We hypothesized that branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) metabolism in the placenta plays an important role in placental glutamine synthesis. This hypothesis was tested by studying conceptuses… Show more

“…Concentrations of glutamine are highest among amino acids in fetal tissues and maternal placenta (Self et al, 2004), and there are increased concentrations of glutamine in allantoic fluid in the second third of gestation (Wu et al, 1996), which highlights the importance of glutamine during that stage of rapid placental and fetal growth.…”

“…Glutamine is an important amino acid for a variety of metabolic processes in the whole organism, participating in the synthesis of amino sugars and nucleotides that are necessary for cell proliferation and differentiation, and playing crucial roles in fetal and placental nutrition. Among all amino acids transferred from the mother and placenta to the fetus, the concentration of glutamine is the highest, suggesting an active synthesis and release into the fetal circulation by the placenta (Self et al, 2004).…”

“…In this process, glutamine is synthesized from glutamate by glutamine synthetase in the placenta (DeMarco et al, 1997). The placental supply of glutamate is derived from the branched-chain amino acid metabolism (Self et al, 2004) and from the fetal circulation (Battaglia, 2000).…”
