Glucoside/(UV absorber) mixtures as photostabilizers for rigid PVC

Abstract: Mixtures of the UV absorbers (UVAs) 4-hydroxybenxophenone, 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone, and phenyl salicylate with their corresponding glucosides were used as photostabilizers for rigid PVC under irradiation by a high-pressure mercury lamp. The mixtures exhibited stabilizing effects that were strong and synergistic, as revealed by increased induction times for HCI evolution, decreased rates of dehydrochlorination, decreased weight losses, and reduced extents of discoloration. Maximum synergism was obtained by us… Show more

“…The PVC films prepared by molding method having a concentration of 2% by weight of UV-absorbers or glucosides in the solvent of tetrahydrofuran. The mixtures exhibited photo-stabilizing effects by decreased rates of de-hydro-chlorination and decreased weight loss [25].…”

“…The UV absorber Chimassorb 81 works by absorbing harmful ultraviolet irradiation and then harmlessly dissipating the energy in the form of heat, as in Eq. 4 [8,9]. When organic calcium complex stabilizers are added to PVC individually to inhibit photodegradation, they can act by substituting active chloride as well as by scavenging HCl, which has an autocatalytic effect in the presence of oxygen [24][25][26].…”

“…However, for flexible PVC, especially transparent products, UV absorbers are typically added to protect the material from discoloring as well as surface cracking during long-term exposure to sunlight [6]. The UV absorbers include a comprehensive range of compound types, but the ones most commonly used in industry are the benzophenone and benzotriazole classes, which work by absorbing most of the incident UV radiation and then dissipating the energy in a nondestructive form [7][8][9].…”

“…Glucosides of UV absorbers and their mixtures with the parent absorbers exhibited a better stabilizing efficiency due to the presence of the multiple hydroxyl groups of the pyranoze ring that acted as costabilizers in the first case [15] or to synergism that occurred in the second case [16].…”
