Glucose–insulin stabilization in type-1 diabetic patient: A uniform exact differentiator–based robust integral sliding mode control approach

Abstract: Diabetes mellitus is a persistent metabolic syndrome caused by impaired capability of the body's production and usage of insulin. This impaired capability results in chronic hyperglycaemia, the elevated glucose concentration in the bloodstream, which may lead to many incurable complications. To escape this dire situation, a proper model-based exogenous infusion of insulin bolus is required, which is usually established via different feedback control strategies. In this article, the authors present a mathematic… Show more

“…Some results have been presented in Reference 17 to show the finite‐time convergence of this differentiator. Application of this differentiation method for medical purposes was further addressed in Reference 4. For μ=0, the URED (6) becomes the STD (4).…”

“…Online differentiation of noisy signals is an inevitable issue in many applications, for example, control systems, 1,2 image processing, 3 and medical devices 4 . This motivates the researchers to improve the differentiators continuously.…”

“…While its control functioning is directly related to the operating characteristics, economic effective generation and equipment security stability. So far, various kinds of control strategies are proposed for MPPT design, which include [6,7], PID control, model predictive control [8], neuro-fuzzy control [9,10], adaptive backstepping control [11,12], sliding mode control scheme [13][14][15] and an integral-based terminal sliding mode control strategy [16]. Moreover, interconnection and damping assignment-based control schemes are presented in [17,18].…”

“…The plasma glucose excursion across the either side of euglycemic range leads to hyperglycemia (when PGC > 180 mg/dl) or hypoglycemia (when PGC < 50 mg/dl) [5]. These extreme glycemic conditions, when existed for a long time, may lead to certain fatal disorders, such as cardiovascular diseases, joint diseases, and kidney failure [7], [8]. To avoid the complications as mentioned above, the infusion of exogenous insulin bolus in T1D patients is mandatory.…”
