The twelve cranial nerves play a crucial role in the nervous system, orchestrating a myriad of functions vital for our everyday life. These nerves are each specialized for particular tasks. Cranial nerve I, known as the olfactory nerve, is responsible for our sense of smell, allowing us to perceive and distinguish various scents. Cranial nerve II, or the optic nerve, is dedicated to vision, transmitting visual information from the eyes to the brain. Eye movements are governed by cranial nerves III, IV, and VI, ensuring our ability to track objects and focus. Cranial nerve V controls facial sensations and jaw movements, while cranial nerve VII, the facial nerve, facilitates facial expressions and taste perception. Cranial nerve VIII, or the vestibulocochlear nerve, plays a critical role in hearing and balance. Cranial nerve IX, the glossopharyngeal nerve, affects throat sensations and taste perception. Cranial nerve X, the vagus nerve, is a far-reaching nerve, influencing numerous internal organs, such as the heart, lungs, and digestive system. Cranial nerve XI, the accessory nerve, is responsible for neck muscle control, contributing to head movements. Finally, cranial nerve XII, the hypoglossal nerve, manages tongue movements, essential for speaking, swallowing, and breathing. Understanding these cranial nerves is fundamental in comprehending the intricate workings of our nervous system and the functions that sustain our daily lives.

The problem of unilateral hearing loss is extremely relevant today, although for many years it was not considered significant due to the assertion that a normally hearing ear is sufficiently able to alleviate a hearing impaired one. Starting from the 1980s, this position was questioned and then refuted in connection with the appearance of works that clearly demonstrated the effects of the negative impact of unilateral hearing loss on the quality of life of adults and children (decrease in intellectual functions/academic performance, socialization skills, quality and pace of speech development). The growing interest in the problem of unilateral hearing loss reflected in the increased number of publications on this topic showed that insufficient attention is paid to this issue in pediatric practice. According to the data obtained, unilateral hearing loss in children (especially congenital) is difficult to detect, its negative impact, in particular, manifests itself in the form of reduced and retarded intellectual development (poor vocabulary, learning problems, communication problems) in comparison with age mates. Early diagnosis of unilateral hearing loss in children is extremely important since the normal harmonious mental development of such patients requires special conditions and individual training programs, work with an audiologist (including the use of hearing aids). The difficulties of diagnosis include the lack of a proven algorithm for diagnosis of unilateral hearing loss, especially in young children. There is no single point of view on therapeutic and corrective measures for unilateral hearing loss in children. In recent years, more and more works have been devoted to cochlear implantation (CI) in children with unilateral hearing loss, which, however, only shows the possible relevance of this method and the need to revise the criteria for selecting candidates for CI, further analyze the results in the postoperative period, and conduct additional studies. The foregoing opens up prospects for further study of this problem in pediatric practice.

Glossopharyngeal neurinoma of incidental finding in a 65-year-old female patient: case report

Background The glossopharyngeal nerve is both a sensitive and motor entity that emerges from the posterior lateral sulcus of the bulb and exits the skull through the jugular foramen. Schwannomas arising from glossopharyngeal nerves are extremely rare, and the clinical and imaging features of glossopharyngeal schwannomas closely resemble that of acoustic schwannomas. Case presentation We report a case of a 65-year-old female patient with glossopharyngeal neurinoma of incidental finding on brain CT scan requested after she sustained a minor traumatic brain injury. She was taken to the operating room, and the tumor was excised endoscopically via a retrosigmoid approach and the postoperative course was simple and uneventful. Histopathology of the sample showed short spindle-shaped cells with poor atypia proliferated in fascicles, and shelf-like arrangement of nuclei was seen partially, which was in keeping with a neurinoma. Conclusions Glossopharyngeal neurinoma may not present with obvious symptoms and signs related to its compression and may also be found incidentally compared to its counterpart vestibular schwannoma.
