A comprehensive study was carried out to evaluate the occurrence, significance of concentrations and spatial distribution of heavy metals (Cr, Cd, Ni, Cu, Pb, Hg, Zn and As) in sediments along the Valencia coastline (Spain). The sampling campaign covered 476 km of the coastline in a 4-year period. The highest concentrations of metals in the sediments were mainly Cr, Ni, Zn and Cd (up to 28.93 mg Cr kg -1 dw, 15.80 mg Ni kg -1 dw, 57.13 mg Zn kg -1 dw and 0.293 mg Cd kg -1 dw), obtained in the northern areas, some central areas and in an isolated area on the southern coastline. The Sediment Quality Guidelines applied reveal that for all metals studied, none of them reached, or exceed, the "effects of median range" or the "probable effect level". The Pollution index reveals that 75% of the stretch coastline has a low priority risk level and the rest "medium-low priority risk level". And, lastly Potential Ecological Risk index shows that all but one zone have low ecological risk.

Benthic macroinvertebrates, macroalgae and phytoplankton constitute the Biological Quality Elements (BQE) proposed in the Water Framework Directive (WFD, 2000/60/EC) to be used for the classification of the ecological status of a water body.Chlorophyll-a is a usefull expression of phytoplankton biomass and this indicator is an effective and relevant BQE for coastal ecosystems which is universally accepted. In the present study, interpretations of the class boundaries according to normative definitions of WFD, are presented for chlorophyll-a in South Eastern (SE) Black Sea. Water quality classification was determined in five different categories as "high, good, moderate, poor and bad". The coastal waters of SE Black Sea were classified in 8 different typologies (K1-K8) based on depth, salinity and substratum types. In this study, types K1 and K2 (>17.5 salinity, >30 m depth) were considered because of availability of time-series data for those typologies. Sinop and Sürmene sites were selected due to the best available long-term chlorophyll-a data set, respectively over the period of 2002-2010 and 2001-2011 for chlorophyll-a respectively. Type specific chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) reference and threshold values were determined based on the 90th percentile of the long-term collected chlorophyll data set. Due to the high seasonal variability of phytoplankton biomass, the annual values were not considered adequate and the classification tool was developed on seasonal basis. The High/Good (H/G) and Good/Moderate (GM) boundaries were defined as seasonal from the long term data sets for Sürmene and Sinop sites. All the boundaries were higher at the Sinop site.Ecological quality ratios distributed between 0-1. It would be necessary to underline the fact that these class boundaries might be higher for waters where depths are below 30 m and salinity values are less than 17.5. However, there is not enough data to support this assumption for the near coast waters of the SE Black Sea. Eventhough Chl-a scaling can not be used as a single tool for the ecological quality classification it is a reliable approach to use the obtained boundaries at temporal and spatial scales for the quality classification of SE Black Sea waters above 30 m depth.

The European Water Framework Directive aims to achieve a good status of all inland and coastal waters in the European Union by evaluating the status and the anthropogenic pressures to natural water bodies. As such, several techniques have been developed to evaluate the anthropogenic pressure to coastal areas. The most widespread methods are indexes, although some authors have also used the application of models. Using indexes has many advantages, such as the simplicity or the fast application. The anthropogenic pressure is generally assessed through the application of an index which is calculated based on parameters such as population density, urbanization, industry, agriculture, fisheries and maritime transport. However, the dispersion of contaminants along the coast is a factor that is generally overlooked by such indexes. Natural coastal waters have been widely assessed in Member States. On the contrary, heavily modified coastal waters, which are generally located close to the biggest urban areas, have been left aside in the evaluation process. To demonstrate that minimizing pollution in heavily modified coastal waters is a must, we evaluated several nutrient concentrations in natural coastal waters of the Jucar River Basin District, located in the Western Mediterranean Sea (Spain). We calculated the correlation between nutrient concentrations and several anthropogenic pressures, including the presence of adjacent water bodies considered as heavily modified by human activity under the Water Framework Directive. Then, a forward stepwise linear regression was applied to identify the activities most affecting nutrient concentrations. It was found that the presence of a neighbouring water body classified as heavily modified was the main driver of nutrient concentration differences among natural water bodies. These results suggest that the evaluation of anthropogenic pressures to coastal waters should also consider the dispersion of pollutants from adjacent heavily modified coastal waters.
