Glomerular cell cross talk in diabetic kidney diseases

Abstract: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a severe microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus. It is the leading inducement of end‐stage renal disease (ESRD), and its global incidence has been increasing at an alarming rate. The strict control of blood pressure and blood glucose can delay the progression of DKD, but intensive treatment is challenging to maintain. Studies to date have failed to find a complete cure. The glomerulus's alterations and injuries play a pivotal role in the initiation and development of D… Show more

“…Studies on urinary exosomes as markers for early diagnosis and treatment of diabetic nephropathy have shown the value of urinary exosomes in the early diagnosis of diabetic nephropathy, but there are relatively few studies on the correlation between diabetic nephropathy and urinary exosomes with clear histopathological diagnosis by renal biopsy [16][17][18] . Studies have shown the mechanism of glomerular cell crosstalk and the transmission of information between cells by exosomes in early diabetic nephropathy [19][20][21][22] . MiRNAs hoarded within exosomes are more stable and speci c than mRNAs and are not easily degraded [23] .…”

“…For example, studies have reported cellular crosstalk between endothelial cells (ECs) and podocytes [ 13 16 ]. Moreover, Dong et al demonstrated the mechanisms underlying the crosstalk of glomerular cells in DKD, providing a direction for future research [ 17 ]. Most studies typically focus on ECs and podocytes, both of which play important roles in DKD development.…”
