“…The main contribution of this paper is to model the effect of fiscal consolidations on levels and relative shares of four categories of social expenditures, conditional on welfare state regimes. Confirming the findings of several other researchers (Korpi & Palme, 1998; Pierson, 2001; Santos & Simões, 2021; Swank, 2001), we find that labour market insurance is less resistant to consolidations in the Liberal regime, possibly because of the targeting of their income protection benefits. Pension levels and budget shares are particularly resistant to consolidations in the Southern European regime.…”

“…This paper makes several contributions to the study of the comparative political economy of the welfare state. Previous studies have shown that welfare state regimes condition the effect of globalisation on social expenditures (Kim & Zurlo, 2009; Santos & Simões, 2021; Swank, 2001), but we analyse how welfare state regimes condition the choices made during specific episodes of fiscal consolidations. Moreover, by comparing the trade‐offs between welfare state expenditure categories, we innovate relative to most studies on comparative welfare states that focus on a single expenditure category, without analysing the relationship between different components of the budget (Lipsmeyer et al, 2023).…”

“…Esto permitiría incrementar la participación de mujeres y hombres en el mercado de trabajo, reduciendo la diferencia de salarios por razón de género y disminuyendo el riesgo de pobreza y exclusión social. En este sentido, se ha comprobado el éxito del conocido como modelo económico nórdico (Pampillón Olmedo, 2008), que ha fomentado la igualdad y ha disminuido el riesgo de exclusión (Santos, M., & Simões, M., 2021).…”
