Global Water Governance and Climate Change: Identifying Innovative Arrangements for Adaptive Transformation

Abstract: A convoluted network of different water governance systems exists around the world. Collectively, these systems provide insight into how to build sustainable regimes of water use and management. We argue that the challenge is not to make the system less convoluted, but rather to support positive and promising trends in governance, creating a vision for future environmental outcomes. In this paper, we analyse nine water case studies from around the world to help identify potential 'innovative arrangements' for … Show more

“…A series of variables limit the availability of hydric resources that can be used in agriculture [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Within this context of scarcity, improving water use efficiency has become a priority [7][8][9]. Water Use Efficiency in Agriculture (WUEA) usually involves consuming less water to reach a specific production goal or increasing the production of a given water supply [10].…”

“…For example, the shared act of interrogating and understanding a narrative or discourse can build collaborations, share understandings and lead to the design of new futures [55]. Innovative arrangements for governance [56] and for moving beyond single issues [57], become more attainable with these collaborative, transdisciplinary approaches. For transformation of practice, collaboration needs to occur not only among scientists of different disciplines, but also at science and practitioner interfaces [58].…”

“…Severe water deficit limits crop growth and yield with negative economic consequences [14]. In the last few years, rainfall has declined in some parts of the Mediterranean region due to a climatic change [15] causing substantial shortage in the available water resources for agricultural production.…”
