Global warming potential of wheat production in Western Australia: a life cycle assessment

Abstract: This study presents a greenhouse gas (GHG) life cycle assessment of 1 tonne of wheat transported to port in south-western Australia, including emissions from prefarm, onfarm and postfarm stages. The prefarm stage included GHG emissions from agricultural machinery, fertiliser and pesticide production. The onfarm stage included GHG emissions from diesel use, liming and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions from N fertiliser applications. The postfarm stage included grain storage and transportation to the port. GHG emi… Show more

“…For example, national adopted EFs have been used in LCA studies of feed and crop production (e.g. Biswas et al, 2008;van der Middelaar et al, 2013) and of milk products (e.g. Flysjö et al, 2011).…”

“…Entretanto, a lignina não é facilmente hidrolisada para ser utilizada na produção de etanol [19]. Vários estudos têm sido realizados para a avaliação do desempenho ambiental na produção de etanol celulósico, por exemplo, de eucalipto [20], trigo [21], palha [22], grama [23], entre outros.…”

“…When carbon sequestration by grassland was considered, pasture systems reduced net GHG emissions. The type of feed used in pasture and confinement systems has potential implications on both EM and total GHG emissions (Biswas et al, 2008;Arseneault et al, 2009;Belflower et al, 2012). This suggests the need for more system-level evaluations of GHG emission per kg milk to fully realize the source of a system's GHG impact and provide solutions for mitigating their emission.…”
