Global trends and hotspots in research on extended reality in sports: A bibliometric analysis from 2000 to 2021

Abstract: Objective Extended reality technologies (e.g. virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR)) are gaining popularity in sports owing to their unique advantages. This study aims to analyse the progress of the application of extended reality technology in sports and reveal its cooperative features, research hotspots and development trends. Methods We searched the literature in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database within the period 2000 to 2021 and conducted a bibliometric anal… Show more

“…The studies included in this review utilized a range of research designs, such as experimental [20][21][22][23][24]. The studies were conducted from 2018 to 2022, a finding which is in full agreement with the results of a recent bibliometric analysis [25]. Most of the studies, with regards to the main variables included, followed a quantitative methodology [20,21,23,26,27], one followed a qualitative methodology [22], and one was a mixed-method study [24].…”

“…However, some fragmentation is observed in this sector, signalling the need for more integrated and systematic research. [4] The integration of Extended Reality (XR) technologies with other mainstream technologies is expected to have a positive impact on sports activities in both professional and leisure contexts. The existence of a growing demand for technological innovation to meet the needs of sports users is recognised, thus highlighting the potential to achieve significant benefits at a cost-effective price.…”

“…Recent interests in researching the applicability of Extended Reality (XR) in the field of sport reveal a varied and dynamic territory characterised by the increasing adoption and integration of technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR). I will initially present a table summarising key information drawn from recent literature: Their study highlights the most important areas of research interest, including the use of XR systems in sports games, virtual simulation equipment, and the incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) into athletic training and performance enhancement [4].…”

“…Another important aspect in the behavioural change of adolescents is physical activity, considering the growing trend towards increased obesity 12 in this population, and the difficulties in carrying out health education. Studies relating VR to the practice of physical activity, for example, date back to the 1990s, 13 and due to the potential for immersion, interactivity and imagination, 14 its use has strongly increased.…”
