“…The last 20 years saw a paradigm shift in the conceptualization of addiction, suggesting that addictive behaviors can take place in alternative realms which may not necessarily involve the use of substances (i.e., behavioral addictions; APA, 2013; Burleigh et al, 2019 , Demetrovics and Griffiths, 2012 , Griffiths, 1996 , Griffiths, 2005 , Griffiths, 2017 , Kardefelt-Winther et al, 2017 , Sixto-Costoya et al, 2021 , West and Brown, 2013 , Wong et al, 2012 ). These include a range of diverse behaviors such as excessive online gambling ( Griffiths, 1995 , Montiel et al, 2021 ), hypersexual activity ( Carnes, 1983 ; Krueger, 2016 ), problematic internet use ( Anderson et al, 2017 , Stavropoulos et al, 2013 , Van Rooij et al, 2017 ), disordered gaming ( Pontes et al, 2021 , Stavropoulos et al, 2019 ), problematic social media use ( Pontes et al, 2018 , Schivinski et al, 2020 ), compulsive shopping ( Andreassen et al, 2015 , Müller et al, 2021 ), and problematic exercising ( Beck Lichtenstein and Jensen, 2016 , Beck Lichtenstein et al, 2017 ).…”

“…Apart from the rates of prevalence, empirical evidence and discussions prior to the COVID-19 pandemic show that examining these behavioral addictions is important. For example, the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) has begun to acknowledge the importance of behavioral addictions [ 38 , 39 ], and the social impacts of behavioral addictions have led to growing interest that need further evidence investigating its pathophysiological mechanism [ 40 42 ], comorbidity between psychiatric disorders and behavioral addictions [ 43 , 44 ], and the potential treatments of behavioral addictions [ 45 , 46 ]. Therefore, the evidence and discussions prior to COVID-19 pandemic additionally support the importance of investigating behavioral addictions during the pandemic.…”

“…Following Rodríguez-López et al ( 2020 ), the search query applied in the present work is the following: TI=(restaurant*) OR AK=(restaurant*), where TI and AK stand for the title field and author keywords field, respectively. The search in these fields is preferred in previous studies (Hernández et al 2017 ; Sixto-Costoya et al 2021 ; Villa et al 2018 ) since it helps to avoid non-pertinent entries and achieve greater accuracy in the results (Alnajem et al 2021 ; Gao and Ruan 2018 ). The review is based on four sub-databases within the WoSCC, namely Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED), Social Science Citation Index (SSCI), Art & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI), and Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI).…”
