Global research profile on monkeypox-related literature (1962–2022): A bibliometric analysis

Abstract: The recent monkeypox or mpox outbreak has been a global concern. The present study evaluated the global research outputs, research trends, and topics of published research on monkeypox using a bibliometric approach. The Scopus database was searched for terms associated with "monkeypox" or "monkey pox" up until 19 November 2022. Maps and bibliometric indicators of the retrieved documents were shown and analyzed. A total of 1,422 documents were obtained from Scopus. Other than monkeypox, the most commonly used t… Show more

“…Currently, Tecovirimat, which acts through intervening with the viral envelop protein, 63 is the only European Medicines Agency (EMA)‐approved antiviral for the treatment of smallpox, cowpox, Mpox, and vaccinia complications. Interestingly, exploring topics in a bibliometric analysis of the literature on MPXV has recently revealed that Tecovirimat remains the most‐investigated topic 64 . However, Cidofovir and Brincidofovir could also be efficacious against Mpox, but the scarcity of clinical trials is prohibiting the approval of these drugs for pox‐like infections in humans 5 .…”

“…In this study, the Scopus database served as our sole data source because it covered a large range of journals and a high number of articles relative to other libraries such as Web of Science or PubMed [93,94]. Scopus has also been validated and recognized in other bibliometric analyses [75,79,[95][96][97]. Data extraction was performed on December 17, 2022.…”

“…The rising incidences of human mpox highlights the need for vigilant surveillance for the disease, prompt diagnosis, and developing effective vaccines, drugs, and treatment options [ 19 , 20 , 21 ]. Primary prevention of mpox is achieved by public awareness campaigns that highlight the risk factors for the disease and the preventative steps that can be taken to lessen those risks [ 15 , 22 , 23 ].…”
