Global, regional prevalence, incidence and risk factors of knee osteoarthritis in population-based studies

Abstract: Background Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a major cause of disability in the elderly, however, there are few studies to estimate the global prevalence, incidence, and risk factors of knee OA. Methods For this study, we searched PUBMED, EMBASE and SCOPUS from inception to April 4, 2020, without language restriction. We identified eligible studies with information on the prevalence or incidence of knee OA in population-based observational studies and extracted data from publ… Show more

“…The literature shows a higher prevalence and incidence of KOA in women with evidence in abundance. [ 1 2 ] The gender bias is noted not only in presentation of several diseases but also in access to treatment facilities in several countries including both developed and developing countries. The cultural factors, socioeconomic status, availability of health-care facilities and geographic factors may have an impact on the prevalence of gender bias in KOA not only in India but also in the Western world too.…”

“…According to the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017 studies, the prevalence of knee OA is positively correlated with increased age, and radiographic knee OA is more prevalent compared to systematic knee OA [3]. The population-based studies have shown that the global prevalence of knee OA was 16.0% in individuals over 15 years of age and 22.9% in individuals over 40 years of age [4]. According to a National Health Interview Survey, approximately 14 million people are affected by systematic knee OA in the United States [5].…”

“…The prevalence of knee OA increased significantly over the last decades and continues to rise [ 4 ]. For knee OA, in 2020, the global prevalence was 16.0% (95% confidence interval (CI), 14.3–17.8%) and global incidence was 203 per 10,000 person-years (95% CI, 106–331) [ 5 ]. However, an ideal treatment for knee OA does not exist at this time [ 6 ].…”
