Global, Regional, and National Incidence and Year Lived with Disability for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia from 1990 to 2019

Abstract: The objective of this study is to provide comprehensive and up-to-date estimates on the disease burden of BPH in 204 countries and territories between 1990 and 2019. Data about incidence, year lived with disability (YLD), and their age-standardized rates (ASRs) for 21 regions, 5 Socio-demographic Index (SDI) quintiles, 204 countries and territories, and 12 age categories from 1990 to 2019 were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 study. Estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs) of the ASRs and the… Show more

“…In 2019, it was estimated that the incidence of BPH was as high as 2298.45/100,000 in the age group of 65-70 years [ 1 ]. The burden of BPH will further increase as global population ageing accelerates [ 2 ]. When conservative and pharmacological treatments are not effective, surgery is often unavoidable.…”

“…BPH is one of the most common diseases among middle-aged men. It occurs in 15% to 60% of men aged 40 and older, and the prevalence increases to 70–80% after the age of 80 [ 47 , 48 ]. The obstructive uropathy of BPH has been attributed to both static and dynamic factors.…”

“…The obstructive uropathy of BPH has been attributed to both static and dynamic factors. The static obstruction is due to the hyperplastic prostatic tissue compressing the prostatic urethra and bladder outlet, whereas the dynamic obstruction is related to the adrenergic nervous system and prostatic smooth muscle tension [ 47 , 49 ]. As mentioned earlier, androgens in BPH play an important role in the differentiation of prostatic growth [ 48 , 50 ].…”

“…Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is one of the most common diseases of older men, affecting about 42% by age fifty and about 80% by age eighty [ 10 ], this proportion increased to 90% by age 85 [ 10 12 ]. Men with BPH usually exhibit a range of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), including frequent and urgent urination, nocturia, urine hesitance, and reduced urination [ 10 , 13 ], which can lead to urinary dysfunction and have a negative impact on quality of life [ 14 ].…”
