Global, regional, and national burden of Guillain–Barré syndrome and its underlying causes from 1990 to 2019

Abstract: Background This article presents the first detailed analysis of the prevalence and disability burden of Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS) from 1990 to 2019 by cause, age, sex, and Socio-demographic Index (SDI) in 204 countries and territories. Methods Data from the Global Burden of Diseases Study (GBD) 2019 were used. GBD 2019 modelled the prevalence of GBS using hospital and claims data. “…The Danish study found that the incidence was 44% higher in men, again mirroring our findings (2.0 vs. 1.4), and across the previous literature [44]. Finally, recent data from the Global Burden of Diseases Study in 2019 [52] found that the age-standardised prevalence of GBS had a small positive association with the level of socio-economic development, which mirrors the trends of higher incidence and lifetime prevalence we saw with lower levels of deprivation.…”

“…SDI is a composite indicator that measures the developmental level of each country. It is defined as 0 in the lowest case and 1 in the highest case, and it is calculated based on the lag-distributed income per capita, the total fertility rate for those younger than 25 years, and the average educational level of the population over the age of 15 years ( 18 ). In our study, the age-standardized prevalence and YLD for each region and YLD for each country were estimated according to the SDI.…”

“…Our dataset for neck pain between 1990 and 2019 was obtained from the GBD website using GBD standards. Several articles have already been published in various disease fields using GBD data (5,(16)(17)(18).…”

“…The SDI is a composite indicator that measures the development of individual countries. It is defined as 0 in the lowest case and 1 in the highest case and calculated based on the lag-distributed income per capita, the total fertility rate for those under 25, and the average educational level of the population over the age of 15 ( 17 ). In our study, the age-standardized prevalence and DALYs for each region and DALYs for each country were estimated according to the SDI.…”
