Global Prevalence of Helicobacter pylori Infection: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: In a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the prevalence of H pylori infection worldwide, we observed large amounts of variation among regions-more than half the world's population is infected. These data can be used in development of customized strategies for the global eradication.

“…Helicobacter pylori ( H. pylori ) has infected more than half of the world's population1 and is an important cause of gastric cancer, mucosal‐associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, and peptic ulcer disease 2. Chronic infection with H. pylori is strongly associated with gastric cancer3 the highest incidence of which is observed in Korea, Mongolia, Japan, and China 4.…”

“…There are great differences in prevalence patterns of H. pylori infection worldwide which depend on the level of urbanization, hygiene, sanitation, access to clean water and other socioeconomic factors (2)(3)(4). Bacterial virulence factors are affecting the final outcome of the diseases and currently, finding those factors are the main question mark for gastroenterologists and microbiologists (5).…”

“…Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is the most diffused chronic bacterial infection worldwide, after dental caries. H. pylori is a gram-negative, micro-aerophilic and acidophilic bacterium present in the stomachs of approximately half the world's population [31,32]. It is the only microorganism capable of living in the hostile gastric environment of man for the entire host's life [3,32] and causes acute and chronic gastritis that greatly increases the risk of peptic ulcers and gastric cancer [3,32,33].…”

It is the only microorganism capable of living in the hostile gastric environment of man for the entire host's life [3,32] and causes acute and chronic gastritis that greatly increases the risk of peptic ulcers and gastric cancer [3,32,33]. The cellular and humoral immune response to the infection stimulates the secretion of chemokines, thus contributing to enhance the systemic inflammatory status [34,35].…”
