Global Precipitation Map Using Satellite-Borne Microwave Radiometers by the GSMaP Project: Production and Validation

Abstract: This paper documents the production and validation of retrieved rainfall data obtained from satellite-borne microwave radiometers by the Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP) Project. Using various attributes of precipitation derived from Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite data, the GSMaP has implemented hydrometeor profiles derived from Precipitation Radar (PR), statistical rain/no-rain classification, and scattering algorithms using polarization-corrected temperatures (PCTs) at … Show more

“…Numerous precipitation products have been developed to estimate rainfall, for example: Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) products (Huffman et al, 2007), Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) precipitation products (Kato et al, 2007), Asian Precipitation -Highly-Resolved Observational Data Integration Towards Evaluation of Water Resources (APHRODITE) (Xie et al, 2007;Yatagai et al, 2012), Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks (PERSIANN) (Sorooshian et al, 2000(Sorooshian et al, , 2002, and Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation product (GSMAP) (Kubota et al, 2007;Aonashi et al, 2009). …”

“…A near-term improvement would build upon this method by incorporating ten years of TMI and PR matchups and devising Tb and rainrate relationships as functions of rain regimes to account for geographical and seasonal variations. The idea of using PR information for the TMI algorithm was previously studied by Masunaga and Kummerow (2005) and Grecu and Olson (2006) for over ocean and by Kubota et al (2007) for over land and ocean. Additional environmental information such as surface temperature and total precipitable water (obtained from NWP model fields) can also be used.…”

“…For example, some previously published maps focus on precipitation and the atmospheric water cycle (Kubota et al 2007), river networks (Yamazaki et al 2009), dams and reservoirs (Lehner et al 2011) or other relevant aspects. A map of BGroundwater Resources of the World ( Richts et al 2011;WHYMAP 2008) has been prepared within the framework of the World-wide Hydrogeological Mapping and Assessment Programme (WHYMAP) coordinated by UNESCO-IHP (BGR 2016).…”
