Abstract. The GRACE satellites provide signals of total terrestrial water storage (TWS) variations over large spatial domains at seasonal to inter-annual timescales. While the GRACE data have been extensively and successfully used to assess spatio-temporal changes in TWS, little effort has been made to quantify the relative contributions of snowpacks, soil moisture, and other components to the integrated TWS signal across northern latitudes, which is essential to gain a better insight into the underlying hydrological processes. Therefore, this study aims to assess which storage component dominates the spatio-temporal patterns of TWS variations in the humid regions of northern mid-to high latitudes.To do so, we constrained a rather parsimonious hydrological model with multiple state-of-the-art Earth observation products including GRACE TWS anomalies, estimates of snow water equivalent, evapotranspiration fluxes, and gridded runoff estimates. The optimized model demonstrates good agreement with observed hydrological spatio-temporal patterns and was used to assess the relative contributions of solid (snowpack) versus liquid (soil moisture, retained water) storage components to total TWS variations. In particular, we analysed whether the same storage component dominates TWS variations at seasonal and inter-annual temporal scales, and whether the dominating component is consistent across small to large spatial scales.Consistent with previous studies, we show that snow dynamics control seasonal TWS variations across all spatial scales in the northern mid-to high latitudes. In contrast, we find that inter-annual variations of TWS are dominated by liquid water storages at all spatial scales. The relative contribution of snow to inter-annual TWS variations, though, increases when the spatial domain over which the storages are averaged becomes larger. This is due to a stronger spatial coherence of snow dynamics that are mainly driven by temperature, as opposed to spatially more heterogeneous liquid water anomalies, that cancel out when averaged over a larger spatial domain. The findings first highlight the effectiveness of our model-data fusion approach that jointly interprets multiple Earth observation data streams with a simple model. Secondly, they reveal that the determinants of TWS variations in snow-affected northern latitudes are scale-dependent. In particular, they seem to be not merely driven by snow variability, but rather are determined by liquid water storages on interannual timescales. We conclude that inferred driving mechanisms of TWS cannot simply be transferred from one scale to another, which is of particular relevance for understanding the short-and long-term variability of water resources.

Radiative impact of mineral dust on monsoon precipitation variability over West Africa

Abstract. The radiative forcing of dust and its impact on precipitation over the West Africa monsoon (WAM) region is simulated using a coupled meteorology and aerosol/chemistry model (WRF-Chem). During the monsoon season, dust is a dominant contributor to aerosol optical depth (AOD) over West Africa. In the control simulation, on 24-h domain average, dust has a cooling effect (−6.11 W m −2 ) at the surface, a warming effect (6.94 W m −2 ) in the atmosphere, and a relatively small TOA forcing (0.83 W m −2 ). Dust modifies the surface energy budget and atmospheric diabatic heating. As a result, atmospheric stability is increased in the daytime and reduced in the nighttime, leading to a reduction of late afternoon precipitation by up to 0.14 mm/h (25%) and an increase of nocturnal and early morning precipitation by up to 0.04 mm/h (45%) over the WAM region. Dust-induced reduction of diurnal precipitation variation improves the simulated diurnal cycle of precipitation when compared to measurements. However, daily precipitation is only changed by a relatively small amount (−0.17 mm/day or −4%). The dust-induced change of WAM precipitation is not sensitive to interannual monsoon variability. On the other hand, sensitivity simulations with weaker to stronger absorbing dust (in order to represent the uncertainty in dust solar absorptivity) show that, at the lower atmosphere, dust longwave warming effect in the nighttime surpasses its shortwave cooling effect in the daytime; this leads to a less stable atmosphere associated with more convective precipitation in the nighttime. As a result, the dust-induced change of daily WAM precipitation varies from a significant reduction of −0.52 mm/day (−12%, weaker absorbing dust) to a small increase of 0.03 mm/day (1%, stronger absorbing dust). This variation originates from the competition between dust impact on daytime and nightCorrespondence to: C. Zhao (chun.zhao@pnl.gov) time precipitation, which depends on dust shortwave absorption. Dust reduces the diurnal variation of precipitation regardless of its absorptivity, but more reduction is associated with stronger absorbing dust.

RESUMODurante o verão austral, diversas regiões do Brasil são afetadas por precipitação intensa, geralmente associada à Zona de Convergência do Atlântico Sul (ZCAS). O objetivo geral deste trabalho foi investigar a influência da resolução espacial e temporal dos dados de temperatura da superfície do mar (TSM) na simulação da precipitação associada à ZCAS. Foram realizadas simulações com o modelo BRAMS (Brazilian developments on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System) para dois eventos de ZCAS, ocorridos em 1998 (El Niño) e 1999 (La Niña). A quantidade de precipitação acumulada na parte oceânica da ZCAS foi maior nos experimentos com TSM mais quente. Índices estatísticos foram utilizados para verificação do desempenho do modelo na simulação de precipitação nas regiões que compõem a ZCAS (oceânica, costeira e amazônica), com diferentes dados de TSM. A resolução espaço-temporal dos dados de TSM influencia de forma pouco significativa na representação da ZCAS pelo modelo BRAMS. O modelo é mais eficiente em identificar a ocorrência/não ocorrência de chuva do que em localizar núcleos mais intensos e seu desempenho foi superior (inferior) na região amazônica (oceânica) da ZCAS. Palavras-chave: modelagem numérica, ZCAS, TSM, precipitação.ABSTRACT: IMPACT OF SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURE IN THE SIMULATION OF SOUTH ATLANTIC CONVERGENCE ZONE During austral summer, several regions of Brazil are affected by intense precipitation, generally associated with the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ). The general aim of this work was to investigate the influence of spatial and temporal resolution of sea surface temperature (SST) data in simulating precipitation associated with SACZ. Simulations with the model BRAMS (Brazilian developments on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System) were performed for two SACZ events, occurred in 1998 (El Niño) and 1999 (La Niña). The amount of accumulated precipitation in oceanic SACZ was larger in experiments with warmer SST. Statistical indices were used in order to verify the model's performance in the simulation of precipitation in the regions that compound SACZ (oceanic, coastal and amazon), with different SST datasets. Different time-space resolution of the SST data set does not have significant influence on the SACZ simulated with the BRAMS model. The model is more efficient in identifying occurrence/non-occurrence of rain than in localizing more intense nuclei, and its performance was better (worse) in amazon (oceanic) region of SACZ.
