Global Phase Diagram of a Spin-Orbital Kondo Impurity Model and the Suppression of Fermi-Liquid Scale

Abstract: Many correlated metallic materials are described by Landau Fermi-liquid theory at low energies, but for Hund metals the Fermi-liquid coherence scale TFL is found to be surprisingly small. In this Letter, we study the simplest impurity model relevant for Hund metals, the three-channel spinorbital Kondo model, using the numerical renormalization group (NRG) method and compute its global phase diagram. In this framework, TFL becomes arbitrarily small close to two new quantum critical points (QCPs) which we identi… Show more

“…At very low temperatures (not accessible with CT-HYB), the frozen moments will be screened [33] and the entropy of the resulting strongly renormalized Fermi liquid will go to zero as T → 0. This physics has been demonstrated and explored in recent DMFT studies employing the numerical renormalization group (NRG) impurity solvers [49], and in related works on multiorbital impurity models [53,54].…”

“…Recent studies have considered the entropy of multiorbital impurity models in the very low-temperature regime and revealed plateaus associated with the appearance of unscreened moments [53,54]. Here, we present a systematic study of the entropy of the three-orbital lattice system, focusing on the intermediate-and high-temperature regime and on the case of ferromagnetic Hund's coupling.…”

“…As a result, the channel-symmetric 3CK point Γ = 1 separates two distinct phases, namely the 2CK non-Fermi liquid phase for Γ < 1 and the 1CK Fermi liquid phase for Γ > 1. Recently, the global phase diagram of the three-channel spin-orbital Kondo model, which is relevant for Hund metals, has been studied using the NRG method 35 . We adopted the NORG approach to study the critical behavior in the 2CK and 3CK models.…”
